Boards contain some rubbing and wear. A name is printed in an early hand on the front free fly-leaf. Interior pages are generally clean. Corner crease is present on p. 123. Canonicus is the pseudonym of William Shedd (1797-1830), a New England evangelist preacher who was minister for one year at Abington Ma. His "Letters", addressed to William E. Channing (1780-1842), the influential Boston Unitarian preacher, were written in opposition to Unitarian tendencies to deny the agency and personal existence of the devil and his angels. The author, with the use of Biblical scripture argues for the existence of Satan and of fallen spirits.

Bound in period half red morocco with marbled boards. Spine is gilt in 6 compartments. Tiny binder and bookseller stamps (verso of front free end paper) indicate that the binding was executed by Tout & Sons for the Boston bookseller Estes & Lauriat. Binding shows spots of rubbing to the extremities. Corner tips of the boards are neatly patched. Interior contains mild toning and occasional minor wear; faint offsetting is present from some of the illustrations; pages 116-117 display an area of light tanning due to a pressed leaf. Bound in full blind stamped period vellum with 7 raised bands on the spine. Front hinge is professionally repaired / strengthened. Pages are generally clean and crisp with a periodic spot of foxing (or miniscule ash burn); an occasional leaf is lightly age-toned. Several pages towards the end of the volume are numbered and signed twice (i.e. 543 544). A front blank fly-leaf contains a 5 x 32 mm hole and an inscription in a small early hand on the verso. Caecilius Cyprianus or St. Cyprian (200-258 c.e.) was Bishop of Carthage and important early Church father. He was beheaded in 258 during the persecution of Christians instigated by the Roman emperor Valerian. Many of Cyprian's writings still exist.
