Binding is yielding with a cracked hinge at the front pastedown, but the pages are deckled, bright, and unmarked aside from minor staining on front free endpaper.

Mild wear and chipping around the edges o jacket with two small discolored areas on bottom right corner of front cover. Ex-libris sticker on front endpaper. Binding is tight and spine is square. Pages are clean and unmarked. Mild rubbing to edges of boards, otherwise they're straight and clean. Purple marker streak, possibly a remainder mark, on bottom exterior edge of text block.

Pages are lightly tanned and unmarked, aside from browned tape affixed to back flyleaf and seam between front pastedown and endpaper. Back endpaper has tape residue. Title page is torn, with a large chip missing that obscures some text. Boards are lightly soiled, with bumped corners. Spine is sunned. Spine head is torn along gutters, leaving a flap that exposes material and glue beneath. Spine tail is softened. Binding is loose and separating throughout.

Front inner flap is clipped. Pages are clear and unmarked, aside from previous owner's embossed stamp in corner of front endpaper and inscription in black in on the front endpaper. Boards are firm and even and spine is square and tight. Very little shelf wear. Hinges are secure.

Previous owner's markings in light pencil appear on upper opening corner of front flyleaf. Top text block edge is soiled. Boards are soiled, scuffed and edgeworn, with bumped, worn corners and softened spine ends. Back board has sticker damage and residue. Binding is starting throughout and cracked at p68 and p212.

Spine lean with nearly cracked hinges. Brittle, tanning pages that remain unmarked and intact save for a small piece chipped off of fore edge of frontispiece page. Fraying and partially missing top and bottom edges of spine. Fraying and bumps to corners of book. Scuffing and mild discoloration to areas of boards, but gilt design and lettering remains fairly crisp and clean.

With photographs and illustrations from various sources. Jacket is protected in archival sleeve but previously suffered chipping and moderate shelf wear around the edges, tanning to entire jacket with darkening to spine and around the edges. Boards are straight and clean, with mildly bumped corners and spine ends. A Few instances of mildly split binding but hinges remain intact and binding is quite strong on the whole. All pages are clean and unmarked though mildly tanned.

Most hinges cracked and binding starting throughout, boards separating from textblock on one side of French Revolution and Oliver Cromwell II. Essays I has water damage: text block has detached completely from boards, all pages are dampstained and rippled at the bottom (text still legible), bottom of spine is partially ripped at both gutters and dampstained. Boards have dampstaining on all surfaces, more like fading in this case. Spine ends have softened. Gilt on spine and front is still distinct and shiny. Dust jacket seems to have been thoroughly drenched in the spill incident and dried wavy in certain spots. Chipping on corners, fore-edges and spine ends. Larger rips on bottom of spine, top front corner and back bottom corner. Rubbing and creasing along all edges, including gutters.
