Los Angeles: Otto Carqué, 1928. 12mo, pp. 32. Original yellow stiff paper wrappers. Stamp of Sunshine Health Food Store, San Francisco, and publisher's label on front cover. Lightly rubbed and marked, but still near fine. Illustrated throughout. First and only edition. The Carqués were health food producers with their own shop in Los Angeles, and this booklet contains many recipes based on their products, among them Fruitarian Lima Beans, Flaxseed Gruel, and Carob Fig Laxative Biscuits. Very scarce: only one other copy located worldwide [Huntingdon Library, California].

Small closed tear to head of spine, small gift inscription to ffep., otherwise a very good copy in a very good price-clipped dustwrapper, head of spine chipped with loss affecting the 'C' of China, some wear to top edge of front panel, one or two small closed tears. 144 pp. of photographic illustrations by Cartier-Bresson. First UK edition, which seems to have been published simultaneously with its US counterpart.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1988. 8vo, pp. 240. Original blue boards, lettered in silver on spine. 1cm closed tear to top edge of rear panel, spine a touch sunned, some browning to text block. A very good copy. First UK edition of the author's first book. Michael Chabon won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for the glorious, picaresque, century-chronicling The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay. But it all started with The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh, a coming-of-age novel, written when he was twenty-three and still a student. The book took two years to get published, but no time at all to establish Chabon as one of the very best writers of his generation. A very nice copy of a milestone book.

New York: N.p. 1932. Small 8vo, pp. 16. Original stiff paper wrappers, string binding and tie. Wrappers a little darkened, slight wear to edges, but a near fine copy. First edition, first issue. 'This pamphlet owes its existence to the fact that it was rejected by nearly fifty newspapers and magazines.' They weren't bad judges. A prim little homily on the use of 'bad' language on stage, this pamphlet was produced in New York. Two issues exist: this, the first, US issue, is in off-white wrappers and has no printed limitation, while the second issue, for export to the UK, is bound in pink wrappers, has a printed limitation of 500 copies, and uses the English spelling of 'theatre'. The US issue seems much the scarcer. Barrett Clark [1890-1953] was a dramaturg and translator of French drama, who wrote an early [1920s] appreciation of the work of Eugene O'Neill. A very nice copy.

Paris: Olympia, 1957. Small 8vo, pp.94. Original green stiff card wrapping, lettered in black to panels and spine. Spine a little darkened, very slight bump to one corner, new price label ('NF 18') to rear panel, otherwise a near fine, unread copy. Line illustrations by Cocteau. First edition of this (uncredited) translation by Austryn Wainhouse of Cocteau's novel, which was first published in French in 1928 under the title Le Livre Blanc. (The definite article is retained on the half-title and title page of this edition, but the front cover uses 'A'). Two years after its publication this edition was suppressed by the French authorities. Kearney: 5.51.1

A nicely personalised example of this collection of short stories, lacking the dustwrapper.
