Description:
A First UK printing published by John Lehmann, London in 1951. The author's scarce second book. The Book is in near Fine condition. The boards are clean with just some light fading and pushing to the spine ends. There is some mild toning to the text block with light offsetting of the end-papers. The book is tight, clean and free from markings and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition. It bears the correct price of 10s 6d. It has some very minor edge-wear with associated creasing and rubbing to the tips of the spine. The spine is slightly toned but this does not detract from the pictorial wrap around design. The rear panel has mild age related markings but less so than usually encountered. The wonderful period wrapper artwork is by the renowned artist John Minton and looks stunning in the Brodart protective cover. John Minton was commissioned to design the wrappers for both of Camberton's books. The book has been warmly inscribed and signed by the author on the upper front… Read More

There is light toning of the text block and end-papers with some slight creasing to the pages in places. A couple of pages have some small splash marks to the page edges. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. A little toning to the spine with some mild edge-wear affecting the spine ends. The edges are a little nicked with one small closed tear to the upper cover. The rear panel remains remarkably clean for its age. The JOHN MINTON designed wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The wrapper is incredibly scarce to find in any condition and this is certainly one of the nicest examples that we have ever handled to date. One of the… Read More

Description:
The sole UK printing published by Lion and Unicorn Press, London in 1960. This is number '37' of only 200 copies issued. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some light pushing at the spine tips and a little light unobtrusive spotting in places to the covers. Free from inscriptions. Internally very clean. Profusely illustrated in colour throughout by Edward Bawden : 'The illustrations have been reproduced from Edward Bawden's sketch-book, which accounts for the shape and size of this book. To avoid spoiling the drawings, the captions have not been printed on the illustrations themselves, but at the beginning of each section.'. Printed tissue guards throughout. The famously bizarrely and humorously mistranslated English phrasebook for Portuguese speakers, which first appeared in Paris in 1836. Perhaps as early as the 1850s, Mark Twain became aware of the book; he wrote an introduction to the first American edition in 1883. Its' nonsense still amuses. This edition with an introduction by Paul… Read More
