Glasgow: Allan & Ferguson Single sided lithographic trade card, approximately 95mm x 60mm in size, n.d. Lightly browned and lightly soiled, with heavier browning to foot, light abrasions and stains from glue to corners of reverse where once stuck in an album. Brandt's was an Anglo-German merchant bank and accepting house. The Riga branch was opened in 1841 and in 1849 the Russian businesses were formed into two separate entities, with the Archangel and Riga houses breaking away from the St. Petersburg house, so this card presumably dates between 1841 and 1849 (See Orbell, British Banking: A Guide to Historical Records, page 239). No Place: No Publisher Printed single sided trade card, approximately 125mm x 85mm in size, n.d. c.1920? Slightly rubbed, telephone number crossed through and replaced beneath in pen, otherwise quite bright and clean. T.[homas] H.[atton] Lea, stained glass designer, there are examples of his work near to where he was based, at St. Luke's church on Liverpool Street, Weaste. First Edition. Unbound. Buckingham: Seeley Double sided printed card, approximately 75mm x 115mm in size, n.d. c1803? Lightly browned, heavier to reverse, slightly soiled to head of reverse. Possibly late eighteenth century [John] Seeley was printing in Buckingham from 1795-1830 and the Bucks Yeoman Cavalry was formed in 1794, there were three yeomanry regiments by 1803, but more likely to be very early nineteenth century when the Napoleonic invasion scare was at its height. Not found in either ESTC or COPAC. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 32mo. Card.

Weimar: London Und Paris Magazine Hand coloured engraved caricature, approximately 275mm x 225mm in size, n.d. c.1806. Trimmed quite closely but without loss to image, minor creasing from original folds, otherwise fairly bright and clean. Caricature by Gillray, originally published in May 1806 by H.[annah] Humphrey, this was reproduced by Carl Starcke for the 'London und Paris' magazine, which appeared eight times a year in octavo between 1798 and 1815, with each issue consisting of three parts, opening with articles from London, then Paris and a third, satirical, part comprising English and French political caricatures (See Deuling, 'Aesthetics and Politics in the Journal London und Paris (1798-1815)' in Oergel (Ed), '(Re-) Writing the Radical - Enlightenment, Revolution and Cultural Transfer in 1790s Germany, Britain and France', pages 102-118). Previous owners ink stamp to front pastedown, additional engraved title, with engraved frontispiece and nine other full-page engravings (complete as per list), the engraving of Claremont has a small tear to fore-edge. "Charlotte Augusta, Princess [Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales] (1796-1817), was born at Carlton House, London, on 7 January 1796. Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden): Ex Officina Hackiana, 1671. Two volumes in four - Volume One - [16], 528pp; Volume Two - 529-1049, [73]; Volume Three - 448pp and Volume Four - 449-886pp, [72]. Later (late-eighteenth century) full-calf, raised bands, spines in six panels, contrasting title / volume labels to second and third panels, volute corner pieces and central lozenge shaped tool to remaining panels, gilt flower head frame to covers, all edges marbled with blue paste endpapers. Volume one lacks title label, volumes two and three lack both labels, volume label to volume four is chipped with a small amount of loss. Head of spines chipped, some rubbing to extremities, front joints split to all volumes, but all holding well on cords. Some light surface soiling, corners lightly browned from old glue, small closed tear to foot catching text but with no loss, small piece missing from bottom right hand corner, a few small pen trials to borders, probably slightly cropped to head. Advertising the flowers available at A. & McA. including hyacinths, narcissi, tulips and anemones, noting that they "have also on hand all sorts of Agricultural, Garden and Flower Seeds, Fruit, Forest and Ornamental Trees, Evergreen and Flowering Shrubs, Greenhouse Plants, Dahlias, Pansies &c. No Place: No Publisher Single sided printed broadside, approximately 400mm x 385mm in size, no publisher or place but see below, n.d. but probably early 1918. Browned, chipped to edges with some loss, a few small tears, slightly creased from having been folded in four, with many closed tears to folds to reverse. The text is written from a nationalist perspective, asking why British troops should fight for other countries' war aims, "If the Frenchies really must have Alsace-Lorraine, very well, let them fight for it and good luck to them! ... Must our British lads really further risk their skins for such far-fetched aims? Why not let all these other people attend to their own fighting ... why ask our British lads to pluck these hot chestnuts from the fire for them?". A rare and elaborate example of First World War German aerial propaganda which was dropped over British troops on the Western Front. London: London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company Photographic cabinet card of Chang (Zhan Shichai), approximately 110mm x 165mm in size, n.d. c.1880?. Slightly creased across photographic image from the left hand edge to about an inch across, just catching the chest of Chang, heavy vertical crease to centre of card leaving it bowed. An attractive image of Chang and an unknown man, the reverse is printed with the details of the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company, with written details of Chang's size, age and weight, (above 8 feet high, 33 years old and 26 stones in weight) with Chinese characters to either side. Chang apparently had acromegaly, and was advertised as 'standing nearly nine feet high in his stocking feet' (Bogdan, 'Freak Show', page 99), according to Wikipedia he retired in 1878 and lived out the rest of days in Bournemouth, but there is a Times article from 1880 noting that he is appearing with Brustad and Che-Mah at the Aquarium in London.
