Dark green cloth binding, with titling and decorations in white and red on the spine and front cover. Very bright on the cover; slightly faded on the spine. Clean text; 430 pages; very fresh. Description:
New York & Montreal: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1885. Daniel William Cahill (1796-1864), a noted Irish-American educator and lecturer. An ordained Roman Catholic, he strongly opposed the established Church of Ireland. He raised vast sums of money that implemented his good works. This is a Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, a handsome production typical in the Irish diaspora. Fancy Victorian decorative binding; brown cloth, fancy blindstampings filled with black and gilt. Large octavo in size, with a clean text; 511 pages. Light rubbing and bumping. The pages are unfoxed, but Sadlier evidently put all the production cost into the binding, not the quality of paper; it is very soft and is tanning more than expected. Still, one will purchase this volume for its attractive binding and historical importance. Laid-in is a page from another book which appears to be a bibliography of Irish history; Quercus has been unable to identify the specific original work, but must… Read More

Description:
New York: Federal Book Company, 1902. The English novelist and playwright Thomas Henry (Hall) Cain was at one time considered to be the "most highly paid" author of his time. First published in 1885; this is a Very Good (minus) copy of a Reprinted edition. Decorative orange cloth binding. Titling and a floral design in black and gray on the front cover; titling in black on the spine. The title page is missing, so there is no publication date, but Lupton changed its name to Federal in 1902, so it cannot be earlier than that. This book resembles a late 19th-Century pirate, with its very attractive binding but with poor-quality and heavily tanned wood pulp paper stock. Light wear and a darkened spine. Not even a Reading Copy; desirable only for its uncommon lovely binding... Reprint Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Description:
London & New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1895. Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) was the most influential children's book illustrator of the late 19th Century; the American Library Association gives a prize every year named in his honor. This is a Fine copy of a posthumous collection (obviously, the second in the series). There is no publication date, but the book matches the points for a Frederick Ware "first," and Copac generally agrees on 1895; who is Quercus to object to that? Highly decorative binding; a greenish tan cloth with a stamped illustration of many of the characters enjoying a feline fiddle concert. Clean text; approximately 192 pages (each section has its own pagination of about 20-24). It is hard to express the beauty of the illustrations - many in color. The scarce dustwrapper is present; Quercus rates it at Very Good Plus, despite the presence of some chipping at the corners and head and foot of the spine. Very fresh and bright. In an archival plastic protector.… Read More
