Highly decorative cloth binding in black and gold; wonderfully illustrated by Frank C. Pape. Cabell (1879-1958) is generally known as a Southern writer of fantasy. He was highly regarded by Twain and has had an influence on many modern writers of "science fiction" such as Robert Heinlein. Clean text; 359 pages; illustrated endpapers. While both covers are present, the front is unattached and the rear is barely hanging on. Missing the front endpapers (begins with the half-title page). But "Levinsky" endures as perhaps the greatest novel written about the emmigrant experience in America. Despite its fame, it is an uncommon title. This is a Very Good copy of a Later Printing of the First Edition (Harper letter code indicates date of 1919). He is best known for his semi-autobiographical novel, "The Rise of David Levinsky" (1917), which is one of the best works highlighting the Jewish immigrant experience. This is a Near Fine copy of an earlier effort, based upon the assasination of Czar Alexander II in 1881. An uncommon title, issued two years after the Kishenef pogrom. First published in 1885; this is a Very Good (minus) copy of a Reprinted edition. Decorative orange cloth binding. Titling and a floral design in black and gray on the front cover; titling in black on the spine. The title page is missing, so there is no publication date, but Lupton changed its name to Federal in 1902, so it cannot be earlier than that. This book resembles a late 19th-Century pirate, with its very attractive binding but with poor-quality and heavily tanned wood pulp paper stock. Light wear and a darkened spine. Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) was the most influential children's book illustrator of the late 19th Century; the American Library Association gives a prize every year named in his honor. This is a Fine copy of a posthumous collection (obviously, the second in the series). There is no publication date, but the book matches the points for a Frederick Ware "first," and Copac generally agrees on 1895; who is Quercus to object to that? Highly decorative binding; a greenish tan cloth with a stamped illustration of many of the characters enjoying a feline fiddle concert. Clean text; approximately 192 pages (each section has its own pagination of about 20-24). It is hard to express the beauty of the illustrations - many in color. Boston: Phillips, Sampson, and Company, 1854. Scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) wrote in what might be called a didactic romanticism. In addition to his literary work, he was one of the founders of the University of London. His American editor, Epes Sargent (1813-1880), had a literary career of his own as a member of the "Knickerbocker Group." This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First American Edition (from a year earlier). This edition is uncommon, and not usually listed among Sargent's works. .
