"In 1934 two young booksellers, John Carter and Graham Pollard electrified the world of books and book-collecting with an exposure of literary forgery ... An Enquiry is a masterly detective story, gripping and exhilarating in the irresistible force of its analysis; and it led to the inevitable question: who was responsible for the crime? The two authors thought they knew, and though they did not make the bald accusation in their book they left the reader in no doubt as to who it was - Thomas James Wise, the great bibliographer, book collector and editorial authority, held in the highest regard both in England and in America." ~Excerpted from the dust jacket.
