Description:
Toronto: The Copp, Clark Company Limited, 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Kimball, Alonzo. First printing of the Toronto imprint, duodecimo size, 412 pp. The designs of Margaret Armstrong (1867-1944), utilising the Art Nouveau style and floral patterns, were a sensation in the publishing business; Armstrong created over 270 book designs, often for the works of well-known authors such as Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, and George Washington Cable. In addition to designing books, Armstrong wrote books as well, including a comprehensive guide to wildflowers in the American West, which she also illustrated. This novel by George Washington Cable (1844-1925) tells of a romance set in New Orleans during the American Civil War; Cable, considered the "first modern southern writer", used his fiction to highlight the injustices of racism in the South, and he is considered a precursor to William Faulkner. This volume is a scarce Toronto imprint, and has a vintage bookseller's ticket on the… Read more

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1999. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Thiebaud, Wayne. Number 147 of 400 numbered copies for sale, square folio size, [164] pp., signed by Wayne Thiebaud, in original publisher's shipping box. "Italo Calvino, regarded by many as the greatest master of Italian fiction in this century, first published this work in 1972 as Le citta invisibili. A tale mixing fantasy, reality, and philosophy, it recounts a long conversation between a young Marco Polo and an aging Kublai Khan. The book was lauded by Gore Vidal as more than a novel, more like a "meditation or poem" and "perhaps his [Calvino's] most beautiful work". William Weaver, who translated it from the Italian into English, considers that among his translations, "it is the one I reread with the most pleasure"... With artwork by Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920), an American painter associated with the Pop Art movement who is known for (among other things) his urban and landscape paintings, drawing influence from artists like… Read more

Description:
Susan Caspi, 2014. Limited Edition. Fine. No. 14 of 24. Artist book with four components. A lovely poem of longing and insight, beginning: "As lovers welded by their passion / hands, by gloves, encased in fashion" and ending with "do they protect or do they smother? / when I see gloves, I see my mother". The artist has placed her poem upon a replica pair of gloves which can be housed in the evening bag, along with the lipstick and compact - as Susan says in her Artist's Statement: "The gloves representing propriety and the lady like attire that was my mother. An evening bag to contain them but made with Japanese fabrics to represent something more substantial emotionally, a lipstick because you should always show your prettiest face, and a powder compact for the same reason with my mother's lovely face and sweet smile looking back out". Susan realized one day why she was unable to bear having gloves on her hands, even in the snow; because they made her feel suffocated. At that point she wrote… Read more

Letter I of those lettered A to AA, of a total edition of 300 copies, quarto size, 27 pp., signed by Turner Cassity and Charles Gullans. American playwright and poet Allen Turner Cassity (1929-2009) produced this collection of poems with the Symposium Press; many of the poems seem to allude to his time spent in Puerto Rico where he was stationed from 1952 to 1954, having been drafted into the US Army. They are, however, decidedly non-military and contain a smooth rhythm with his observations of the world he saw around him.___DESCRIPTION: Green paper wraps, black lettering on the front wrap, title page in green and black, fore- and bottom edges uncut; quarto size (10.25" by 7.25"), pagination: [1-6] 7-25 [26-27], letter I of those lettered A to AA, of a total edition of 300 copies, signed by Turner Cassity and Charles Gullans on the colophon.___CONDITION: Volume is fine,… Read more

[Verona]: A New Directions Book [Printed by the Officina Bodoni], (1966), 1966. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto size, 108 pp., signed by Ezra Pound, no. 78 of 190 copies. Guido Cavalcanti (ca. 1255 - 1300) is regarded as the first major poet of Italian literatue and was the best friend of Dante Alighieri; he was a character in Boccaccio's Decameron, and influenced writers as recently as 1861 with Dante Gabriel Rossetti - from there he had an influence on Ezra Pound, an admirer of Rossetti. In 1912 Pound first published his translations of Cavalcanti's work, with another publication in 1932. Pound's main focus was on Cavalcanti's philosophy of love and light, and this focus had a further influence on Pound's friend and fellow modernist T.S. Eliot. New York: [Edition Gunnar A. Kaldewey] Printed in the tower of Poestenkill, 1984. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Kuball, Mischa. One of 15 deluxe copies bound in vellum, folio size, 40 pp., signed by Mischa Kuball, in German. "Todesfuge" is one of the "great and terrifying literary works" written by survivors of the Holocaust. Paul Celan (1920-1970) was born Paul Antschel in Romania to a German-speaking Jewish family, his surname was later spelled Ancel and he eventually adopted the anagram Celan as his nom de plume. Celan lived in France and was influenced by the French surrealists but wrote his poetry in German (he was well versed in at least six languages, and also translated the work of many notable poets). As a German-speaking Jewish survivor of WWII, living in France, Celan struggled immensely throughout his life with feelings of estrangement from his native language; he is said to have tried to create his own version of the language, emotionally dismantling it, resulting in an… Read more

[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press, 2014. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. d'Arbeloff, Natalie. No. V of X (total edition 160), folio size, 44 pp., signed by Dick Jones and Natalie d'Arbeloff. Blaise Cendrars (nom de plume for Frederic-Louis Sauser, 1887-1961), the "heir of Rimbaud", greatly influenced the European Modernist movement with his early works, including this one which tells of the voyage of Cendrars through Russia on the Trans-Siberian Express in 1905 during the Russian Revolution. First published in 1913, it is still considered a milestone in the evolution of artist's books; it was interlaced with an abstract pochoir by Sonia Delaunay-Terk, bound accordion style and would have measured almost 7 feet tall when unfolded. This version by The Old Stile Press, illustrated in vinylcuts by Natalie d'Arbeloff keeps the almost-abstract nature of the original, but with a modern sense. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in red and blue paper boards, gold cloth spine with bronze lettering, the front… Read more

London: Printed for C. Cooke ("Cooke's Edition"), n.d.. Hardcover. Poor. Five volumes (complete), twenty-fourmo size size, approx. 1214 pp. Originally published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon; the story has become such a part of our culture that the terms "tilting at windmills" and "quixodic" have entered the vernacular. This likely an early reprint of "Cooke's Edition" as the title page is undated, which edition was apparently first published in the mid eighteenth-century. London: The Argonaut Press, 1927. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Number 628 of 975 copies, quarto size, [318] pp. Sir John Chardin (1643-1712) was a French merchant and traveler; the publication of the first volume of his "Voyages du chevalier Jean Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l'Orient" simultaneously in French and English in 1686 permitted Chardin to "position himself as one of the most important arbiters of European commercial and colonial expansion. Over the next decade two successive editions of his 'Travels' were published in England, along with reprints of his 1671 'Le Couronnement de Soleiman Troisieme.' In 1711, with the publication of the four-volume edition of his 'Travels,' Chardin provided a full and authoritative account, and abbreviated editions followed in rapid succession, testifying to a nearly insatiable European interest in oriental studies and culture. Description:
Bombay: Ganpat Krishna Ji, 1849. Full calf. Very good +. Octavo size, 298 pp., with 189 illustrations, in Marathi. "Aesop's Fables" have been with us for centuries; they are credited to Aesop, a storyteller (who was also a slave) believed to have lived in ancient Greece somewhere around 600 BCE. However, since the fables were originally told and retold orally and are of different origins, it's fairly certain they originated from many different sources. In their manner of teaching morals and wisdom with pithy sayings, many of them attributed to wise and witty (or otherwise) animal characters, they have become a part of many societies and today have been reprinted countless times. They were originally set down in written form in Greek and Latin manuscripts; once printing arrived in the western world, the Fables were amongst the earliest works chosen for the new manner of sharing information. This an 1849 publication of Aesop in Marathi, printed in Bombay. Marathi today is one of the twenty-two… Read more
