Half purple morocco and marbled paper, gilt-stamped lettering and ornament in spine compartments (5 raised bands); parts 1 and 2 bound together, folio (315x475mm); part 1 contains 19 plates, and part 2 contains 50; several plates misnumbered, but all are present. Complete. Text in Italian and French. Binding a bit scuffed, but nice and tight. Some light foxing, but contents are overall bright and clean. Giuseppe Cacialli (Florence, 1770-1828) was an Italian architect who worked for the Grand Duchess Baciocchi, sister of Napoleon, on the two projects in this book -- new wings for the Villa Poggia Imperiale and the Palazzo Pitti.

Full-page engraved half-title of scene of busy hospital room, with patients reclining in beds in background, and ailing patient treated by group of physicians with herbs and bottled medicines. Title printed in red and black. Preface by Swiss editor and physician Johann Conrad Amman (1669-1724). Period half vellum, blind stamped with arabesque to covers, backed in calf of gilt-stamped spine with red morocco lettering label: AURELIANI * DE MORBIS; (binding slightly rubbed with few spots, internally clean and complete). Though Caelius Aurelius was a Latin translator of ancient Greek medical manuscripts, philologists often discuss his work as if he was the original author. Small tear in the vellum at top front joint; front hinge cracked. Early manuscript notations on title-p.; text block browned. An uncommon edition.

Stab binding, purple silk over boards, bound in yellow rope, with tassels extending onto front board, printed red label mounted to front board; in publisher's box; 4to (268x190mm); pp. 141, with color frontis., 3 color plates, 2 folding b/w plates, b/w illustrations in text. Previous owner's bookplate on verso of FFEP, adhesive stain somewhat visible through recto of FFEP; otherwise internally nice and clean, and binding is fine. Box is broken and age-toned.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Original cloth in DJ. Book is near fine. On verso of jacket one sees a semi-circle stain that looks like it could have been left by a large coffee mug. Presents nicely in mylar.

Paris: Hermann, 1968. First Edition. Paperback. Near Fine. 4to. Two volume set. Publisher's printed wrappers. An excellent set housed in publisher's slipcases with frontispieces, plates and photographs. Slipcases with some wear to head and foot of spines, but books themselves are in find condition. Preface by Étienne Dennery. Each volume has an original work at the front: a color lithograph by Marc Chagall in vol. 1, an original etching by Dunoyer de Segonzac in vol. 2. This handsome production was completed under the direction of André Masson in honor of the Director of the Bibliotheque Nationale. A unnumbered limited edition on fine paper.

Spine tips and edges of boards a bit rubbed and sunned; scuff mark on front paste-down (perhaps an attempt to remove an ownership signature); small, faint stain at fore-edge of text block, nowhere infringing into the margins or text itself. Dust jacket rubbed; lightly chipped and torn along the edges, with stains from some old tape repairs; not to shabby in mylar, presents well. Stuart Oderman is a piano accompanist and composer for silent films.

Written in black ink with red, green, brown and yellow ink between whimsically decorated borders of several doves, a lion, confronting rabbits and snails and other fantastical creatures, floreate decoration and flourishing pen marks. Original marbled paper wrappers (edges slightly curled, worm hole). Fine calligraphic writing manual, studying letters and copying popular adages. Title-page notes that this manuscript was created by "Cony" for the Christian Schools of Montpellier, France. Some sayings offer a glimpse of tradition township motto: "Ceux qui ont trouve quelque chose sont tenus de le rendre a celui qui la perdu et s'ils ne le connoissent pas faire tout ce qu'ils peuveunt pour le connaitre a Montpellier."

(likely) mid-to-late 19th century. Hardcover. Near Fine. Original plain wraps, nicely bound in cloth-backed marbled paper boards, "PENMANSHIP" stamped in gilt on spine; oblong 12mo (9.25-by-6.25 inches); pp. 16, plus a smaller tipped-in leaf. A beautiful penmanship practice book, this slender volume includes 6 pages showing the same word or stroke, hypnotically practiced over and over ("unon," "by," "manner," "love"). She also practices the letters A, B, C, E, and her name, Mary, until she deftly progresses to long poems. Boards just a little rubbed and scuffed, otherwise fine.

Period pigskin, elaborately tooled in blind with central lozenge of unidentified armorial device: two rosettes in chief a stork, raised right leg, surmounted by crest and helm; (Annales title lightly dampstained at gutter, Britannia title with lower right corner repaired, occasional spot at front or rear; lacking clasps, corners bumped). Needs rebacking and so sold as is; all maps and plates as called for, and in very good condition. xii, 322; 384 pp. The preface states "whilst pious Missionaries are zealously pursuing their grand object--the conversion of the Heathen to Christianity--they are materially contributing to the stores of general Science, and particularly to the advancement of Geographical Knowledge."
