From front dust jacket flap: "There are few railroads that evoke the legends of early American railroading as do those that were joined at Promontory, Utah by the epochal driving of the 'golden spike.'The Union Pacific formed the eastern portion of that historic union, and its story has grown with that of the United States itself. As the American frontier expanded across the continent, settlers bravely journeyed across the 'Great American Desert' in search of a better life on the West Coast."
This is the history of that transcontinental railroad.

Description:
From front DJ flap: "Introducing us first to 'the people Jesus knew," Thomas Cahill describes the oppressive Roman political presence, the pervasive Greek cultural influence, and expecially the widely varied social and religious context of the Judaism in which Jesus moved and flourished. These backgrounds, essential to a complete understanding of Jesus, lead to the author's stunningly original interpretation of the New Testament - much of it based on material from the ancient Greek brilliantly translated by the author himself - that will delight readers and surprise even biblical scholars.Book - Fine condition. Tan paper over boards w gold gilt text on black spine. Clean and tight. Printed end papers.
Dust Jacket - Very Good- condition. Raised title on front. Actually, it "looks" really nice, but there bumps on the front and a "dent" near the bottom at the spine.

Description:
From back cover: "In mid-1863, the small city of Wilmington, North Carolina, found itself facing a difficult task: it had to supply Robert E. Lee's army if the South was to continue the Civil War. Guns, ammunition, clothing, and food had to be brought into the Confederacy from Europe, and Wilmington was the last open port. Knowing this, the Union amassed a formidable blockading force off storied Cape Fear.""What followed was a contest unique in the annals of warfare. The blockade runners went unarmed, lest their crews be tried as pirates if captured. Neither did the Union fleet wish to sink the runners, as rich prizes were the reward for captured cargoes. The battle was thus one of wits and stealth more than blood and glory. As the Union naval presence grew stronger, the new breed of blockade runners got faster, quieter, lower to the water, and altogether more ghostly - and their crews more daring and resourceful."

from the front flap: "The Golden Gate Bridge should never have been built. The waters at the ocean entrance to San Francisco Bay were too menacing, the Gate was too wide to be spanned by a suspension bridge, the costs of so ambitious a project were too high for an economy in the midst of Depression.""But impossible odds are fuel for the determination of a visionary engineer like Joseph Strauss, and danger is no more than a welcome companion to the steel-nerved bridgemen who willingly risk their lives to turn dreams such as his into reality."In May 1937 the Golden Gate bridge was a dazzling reality.
