Publisher's red cloth, gilt floral device stamped to upper, gilt titles to spine. Boards blind-ruled. Yellow endpapers. Lightly spotted/thumbed throughout, some toning to endpapers. Edges toned and spotted. Boards marked and discoloured, with toning and a black ink stroke to spine. Bumping to extremities. Very good. A fictional tale involving biblical characters, some real and some invented by the author. The story takes place around the event of the Great Flood.

Tours: Ad. Mame et Cie, 1853. [Children's hunting fiction] ILLUSTRATED FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 13cm), pp.[4] 188. With eight tissue-guarded colour chalk lithographs, including a frontispiece, by Victor Adam. Pictorial paper-covered boards, with multicoloured titles to upper board and spine. Very light foxing and toning to leaves with a few creased. Spotting and toning to edges. White paper covers are also spotted and toned, especially to spine. Wear to corners, severe bumping to bottom lower board. A good copy. Mame et Compagnie (1796-1975) was a high-end nineteenth-century French publishing house, specialising in books for young people. Its name is relatively unknown nowadays, as their archives were largely destroyed during World War II. This French language edition of a children's hunting book comes in its unique and decorative original paper binding, with the Mame logo still present. Paris: Libraire des Bibliophiles, 1898. [History of Medicine] LIMITED EDITION. Large octavo (26 x 18cm), pp.[2] xxiv; 366 [4]. With a frontispiece after Daniel Vierge, engraved on copper by F. Masse. Number 464 of just 500 copies in this edition, printed on Van Gelder's vellum paper. Publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to upper board; blind to spine. Top edge gilt; others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Browning to preliminaries and edges; spotting to frontispiece. Some rubbing to cloth, and pulling to head and tail of spine. Repairs to upper joint / hinge. Titles to spine may once have been in gilt, but no longer. Good. A series of articles concerning the medical histories of notable French statesmen, including Louis XI, Richelieu, Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, Dr. Guillotin, Robespierre, and Napoleon.

The fictionalised biography of one Mary O'Neill, who tries to secure freedom and happiness after marrying a cruel, adulterous man. Originally serialised in Hearst's Magazine.

London: Bliss, Sands and Foster, 1894. [Feminist Literature] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.491; [1]. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board. All edges untrimmed. Browning and very light spotting to edges and preliminaries. Neat later ownership to title page, blind bookseller's stamp to rear flyleaf. Light rubbing and a few marks to cloth. Very good. The best-known novel by the early Feminist author and essayist, who wrote extensively on marriage and the status of women in society during the 1880's and 1890's. Known and admired by Thomas Hardy, among others, her work tackled subjects which were deeply taboo in Victorian England, such as marital rape and a woman's right to defend herself against sexual violence. Throughout her career she supported women's suffrage movements, writing essays and attending demonstrations. Illustrated by Caldecott to every page, including several colour plates. Publisher's yellow illustrated paper covers, sewn. Rear adverts suggest the first year of publication 1884, but perhaps not the first issue, since the title 'Ride a-Cock Horse to Banbury Cross' is featured. A little light spotting and thumbing throughout. Heavy wear and chipping to spine; covers nearly detached. A little light chipping to other edges. Good. A verse invocation to lusty maypole dancing, including a veiled suggestion to afford musicians better pay and conditions.

Each leaf printed to one side only, largely by Edmund Evans using his superior six-colour process, but with pp.81-96 printed in fewer colours by Grant & Co. Publisher's green quarter cloth with gilt titles to spine, and colour illustrated pasteboards. All edges red; brown endpapers. Repairs to split hinges. A vertical crease to fly-leaf, with heavy wear to edges generally. Heavy spotting to first and final few leaves, and moderate spotting throughout. Boards toned with very heavy wear. Clean and complete internally, but well-used. Good.

From the comprehensive James Bond collection of bibliographer Jon Gilbert, with accompanying provenance (bookplate and pencilled signature).

Evelyn Beatrice Sainte Croix Fleming (1885-1964), wife of Valentine Fleming, MP. Eve ('Mrs. Val'), was an English socialite known for her flamboyant beauty and being the mother of James Bond writer Ian Fleming. Eve Fleming's nickname from her son Ian was M, and Ian may have used his relationship with her as a model for M, the fictional head of the British Secret Service (and James Bond's boos) in his popular adventure novels. Later part of Jon Gilbert's bibliographical archive of Ian Fleming, with his pencilled ownership signature.
