Description:
Richmond, Virginia. Good in Good dust jacket. 1932. Ephemera. On offer is a letter from a grocery wholesale firm during the Great Depression in America. The letter, dated Nov 1932, was written by Douglas B Beattie, the Secretary of a Richmond VA grocery wholesaler. Staples Grocery Co was in business near the beginning of the 20th century. It operated until 1943 when it was bought out by a larger competitor. Our informal research on Beattie found very little information. He was born in 1881 and lived until 1966. It appears that, at age 84, he was murdered by several young men. His letter was addressed to a Miss Vaughan. It is a reply to her letter concerning some items she was purchasing. He assures her everything should be alright. Amusingly he notes: “Our cachet is not very satisfactory, but it is a “cachet” and that’s what counts”. For a social historian, the letter captures a pleasant moment in time during an otherwise time of grinding economic turmoil. The… Read More

Description:
Brooklyn New York, Minneapolis MN. Very Good. 1868. On offer is a Civil War era archive of five [5] books of which two are the handwritten manuscript diaries from 1868 and 1869 of M. B. Thurlow. Ms. Thurlow lived in Brooklyn, New York and helped run a store on South Street, New York. There are daily entries from July 24th 1868 to December 31st 1869. Very intensly written, sometimes even cross-written, each day begins with a weather report plus store activities. Otherwise Ms Thurlow makes personal comments, tells the events of the day and identifies relatives and social activities. It appears that the store has dealing with quite a number of ships and there is an address for a Captain Masston of San Francisco prominently recorded. There are a number of trips recorded to Ithaca New York where we believe she had more family. Also, there are many, many dozens if not hundreds of names which will provide a treasure trove for genealogists and historians. Along with the two diaries are two… Read More

Attended a Dormitory Freshman get together at the Union ... We had cider and doughnuts for refreshments. Not very interesting otherwise. …" (September 13, 1932). "... Got our Chemistry 6 week tests back and I only got a C+. We had a Math test and as far as I know I got about 65 or 70. I don’t know what’s wrong. I’ll have to do better. Description:
Boonville, NY. Good. 1886. On offer is a very interesting diary kept by a young woman in upstate New York in 1886. Measuring 5 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches, the slim volume contains about 150 pages including memoranda. The diary portion is 100% complete. The covers, binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is legible. Tucked into the diary are three newspaper clippings. These are obituaries published in the local papers. Two refer to the death of her mother in 1914. The third refers to a man who is possibly related to her by marriage. There are also 2 photographs in the diary - 1 is a family grouping and the other is a portrait of a young woman. Research confirms that the picture of the young woman is indeed Jennie Bacon. Interestingly, in the same pocket that held the photographs was a folded paper package that contains a small calibre bullet casing. The flyleaf is inscribed "Jennie Bacon, Layden NY Jan 4th, 1886". Research establishes that she was born in… Read More

Description:
Venice, Italy. Good+. 1767. Ephemera. On offer is a fine example of an order issued by a senior Venetian government official in the mid-18th century. The document was written in 1767 by Paolo Baglioni, the Podestra or Chief Magistrate of Chioza (modern-day Chioggii). Chioza dates back to the Roman times. The community lies on a small island at the south end of the Lagoon of Venice. Its existence has always been linked with Venice. For much of the Middle Ages, Chioza was under the rule of the Republic of Venice and has been referred to as “Little Venice” because of its canals. Venice had been an independent and very wealthy city from 687 AD until 1797 AD. Fishing was always part of the economy of Chioza but the city’s main economic activity became the salt trade. Our informal research has not found any additional information about the author of this note. The document does make reference to a “militia”. This small document measures 5.5 inches by 8.25 inches. On offer is a super, rather intriguing group of letters [17 w/10 covers] written by a young American gentleman living in Chile circa 1889 whose name we conclude was George Bambach Hawes as evidenced by a letter addressed to a Myra S. The letters are quite lengthy some five or six pages several double sided. George lived in Conception City, Chile working for Banco de Concepcion as a bank teller. All of George Bambach Hawes letters are written to Miss Myra S. Curtis of Mendota Illinois. Apparently he was infatuated with her, and considered her his companion. There is mention of romance, but also some travel in these letters some contain great descriptions of life in Chile. It seems his family mother, father, and sisters were already living in Chile. John writes that he should just… Read More
