Description:
Lugd. Batavorum : Ex. officina Adriani Wijngaerden, 1652. Hardcover. Near Fine. Most attractively rebound in 2000 by the master binder Pat Bruno of Sacramento, California Bacon, bound in full, rich, creamy brown leather, sympathetic to the period, ruled and with four fleurs-de-lis to the four corners, front and rear, carefully tooled in gilt at spine, and with date of publication (1652) at spine bottom and four raised bands to add texture. Only the very lightest of dust soiling along top edge. Text in Latin, this being a profoundly important work by Francis Bacon, the English philosopher Francis Bacon, born in 1561, died in 1626. The engraving at title page is quite precious, depicting as it does the mature author, hard at work at a book in double-folio format, and perhaps the younger Bacon or simply another young man (or young woman, given a swelling breast), holding a book aloft, and with the barest outlines of a building (library) in the upper right-hand corner.
