Description:
1 p.l., 53 pp. Large 4to, orig. blue wrappers, uncut. London: J. Smith, 1826.<p> A remarkable association copy of this extremely rare offprint, linking two of the greatest scientists of the 19th century, and pre-figuring Babbage's later work on his difference and analytical engines. This copy bears the following inscription on the title-page in Babbage's hand: "To M. Gauss from the Author." Additionally, Babbage has written on the upper wrapper: "M. Gauss. Influence of Signs. 3. Ch. Babbage. On the influence of signs in mathematical reasoning." <P>Babbage here presents his views on the importance of symbolic notation in mathematical reasoning. He argues that algebraic symbolism enables one to express ideas more briefly and precisely than in ordinary language; it enables one to consider problems in great generality, rather than only in special cases; and it often enables one to consider simultaneously different cases of a problem that would otherwise be treated… Read More

Description:
Title & 109 pp. (engraved throughout). Oblong folio, cont. German half-sheep & marbled paper boards (front hinge strengthened, corners a little worn, some minor soiling & foxing). Zurich: J.G. Naigueli, [1801]. First edition of The Well-Tempered Clavier Book One (BWV 846-869), a landmark in European musical history. It surpassed " in logic, in format and in musical quality, all earlier endeavours of the same kind by other masters...[it] represents the culmination of a 20-year process of maturation and stands unparalleled in the history of music."-New Grove, Vol. 1, p. 813. The work, however, had to wait almost 80 years to appear in print, when it heralded the great Bach revival of the 1820s led by Mendelssohn. Three editions came out simultaneously: by Naigueli in Zurich, Hoffmeister & Compo in Leipzig, and N. Simrock in Bonn. During Bach's lifetime less than a dozen editions of his works appeared in print. Very rare. A very good copy in a folding cloth box.

Description:
Engraved allegorical frontis. 1 p.l., vi, 93 pp. 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed marbled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. N.p.: 1751. First edition. Bachaumont (1690-1771) was an influential noble who grew up at the court of Versailles during the height of its significance as the political and cultural nucleus of France. He frequented the salons of Paris and was entangled in several controversies, one in particular regarding a journal filled with gossip ascertained at the salon of Madame Doublet de Persan, for which he may have been partially responsible. By the end of his life, he was known as a cultural authority, whose opinion was sought after by artists and collectors alike. In the present work, his most important, Bachaumont espouses his beliefs on the aesthetics of art. Its publication was met with an enthusiastic reception. Fine copy. Name of author inscribed on title in a contemporary hand. &#10087; Dictionnaire des Journalistes… Read More

Description:
Gothic type, double column, 66 lines (33 line-pairs). [373] leaves. Decoration by a contemporary Dutch or Westphalian artist (see below). Eight pinholes to the sheet preserved. Royal folio (385 x 270 mm.), mid-18th cent. French red morocco over heavy boards, by Louis Douceur, triple gilt fillets round sides, spine nicely gilt, a.e.g. Mainz: [Peter Schoeffer], 1460 [but ca. 1469]. Second impression (of three) of the original edition, first printed in 1460, in which Gutenberg first used the revolutionary method of two-line printing slugs, thereby finding "a solution to the challenge of permanently fixing typographical compositions" (Needham, p. 432). The Catholicon was not printed with movable type, Gutenberg's first great invention, but with units of paired lines or "slugs." It is an early form of stereotyping or linotype setting. The method was as follows: as composition in type of the Catholicon progressed, a secondary casting was made in units of paired lines or "slugs" in order to allow future… Read More

Description:
Woodcut Medici arms on title. 8 p.l., 68, [4] pp. Large 4to, cont. calf, arms in gilt of Nicolas Joseph Foucault on covers, spine gilt, contrasting morocco lettering piece on spine. Florence: Santi Franci, 1681. First edition of Baldinucci's biographical history of Italian art and architecture from 1260 to 1300. The author's son, Francesco Saverio Baldinucci, edited the remaining five volumes published in the years 1686-1728 and covering the period 1300 to 1670. This is a very handsome copy from the library of Nicolas Joseph Foucault (1643-1721), statesman and archeologist, with his arms in gilt on the covers and his armorial bookplate. Baldinucci's work was based on published sources as well as original research with unpublished manuscripts and documents and is considered by Cicognara to be a worthy successor to Vasari. Fine and crisp copy. &#10087; Brunet, I, 622-"Cet ouvrage est difficile à trouver complet.".

Printed in Hangul & Chinese characters. 22; 57; 28; 55 folding leaves. Four vols. Small folio (302 x 197 mm.), orig. semi-stiff wrappers (upper cover of first vol. is a little soiled), manuscript title labels on upper covers, old stitching. [Korea]: 1907. An extremely rare Korean edition with no copy listed in WorldCat; this is a translation of Nü sishu, a collection of Confucian works all written by women. The collection was first published in China before appearing in Korea. "The Nü sishu (Four Books for Women) were regarded as a counterpart to the famous Sishu 《四書》(Four Books) grouped by Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130-1200 CE), a Song Neo-Confucian. In the Confucian tradition, the four books for gentlemen's learning included: (1) the Analects, (2) the Mencius, (3) the Great Learning, and (4) the Book of the Mean. The Sishu exerted immense influence on Chinese society, thought, and culture, particularly in the period from 1313 to 1905 during which these four books were used as standard… Read More

12 p.l., 374, [24] pp., one leaf of errata. 4to, cont. English dark blue morocco (unimportant scuffing to extremities), covers panelled in gilt & blind, spine finely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Amsterdam: J. Claus & others, 1676. First edition, rare, and a splendid copy bound in contemporary English dark blue morocco, most probably for presentation, of the classic exposition of the Quaker philosophy. The Society of Friends, as Quakers are more formally known, has historically had an outsized influence through the mere force of passive resistance. Their form of Christianity is "widely divergent from the prevalent types, being a religious fellowship which has no formulated creed demanding definite subscription, and no liturgy, priesthood or outward sacrament, and which gives to women an equal place with men in church organization."-Encyc. Brit. The Quakers were also instrumental in the colonization of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Following the foundation of the Society of… Read More
