Printed soft cover. = A fine, well-illustrated monograph in the series Fossils & Strata (no. 39) with new species but also with many taxa in more or less open nomenclature. The faunas described are generally well-preserved. A very good, clean copy of the original publication, not the inferior (on demand?) reprint.

Leipzig, privately published, 1895. Small 4to (24.8 x 19.4 cm). 26 pp., one double-sized folded lithographed plate, original printed wrappers. = A fine study on this enigmatic fungus. This is Johann Bachmann’s thesis. Apparently this is an offprint, with the pagination from the Botanische Zeitung (which is printed on the plate). Fold in rear blank, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare. Not in Volbracht (neither in the 2017 supplement).

Wien, Naturhistorisches Museum, Springer, 1959-1983. Three papers in three. 8vo (24.1 x 17.0 cm), small 8vo (20.4 x 14.7 cm). 39 [8; 9; 22] pp., 11 [4; 0; 7] plates, 9 [3; 2; 4] text figures. Original printed wrappers, or without cover as issued. = Three important papers on mostly well-preserved Tertiary turtles. The first paper co-authored by H. Schaffer, the second (1981) and third paper co-authored by M. Mlynarsky. The third paper contains a new species and a review of the similar Tertiary species. The last two papers inscribed by the first author, i.e. the name of the Austrian palaeontologist A. Tolmann, and with the latter's stamp. Otherwise good, clean copies.

Publisher's paper covered boards with printed label on the spine. = A very rare work on angling in southern England, especially the greater London area. The plates show hooks and tackle. Little is known about the author. Uncut. Boards a bit rubbed and paper cover split at the joints, binding starting, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Two parts in two. 8vo (24.0 x 16.1 cm). 379 pp. [xx, 204; xiii, 142]; numerous fine photographs (unnumbered plates with blank versos) of remarkable trees. Original, near uniform pictorial wrappers. = A seldom-seen work on Swiss trees. The Vaud Canton is situated in the west of Switserland, with Lausanne as its capital. On the south side it borders Lac léman, and it's highest point is the Alpine mountain massif les Diablerets ("the abode of devils"). The first volume is in second edition; the second in first edition. All are rare. The trees photographed are truly majestic. Their localities, owners, altitude, height and with are recorded. Laminated pictorial softcover. = A major monograph by the German entomologist Martin Baehr (1943-2019), discussing, describing and illustrating 132 species and one subspecies of Australian carabid beetles. Many are new. "There is no doubt that Dr. Martin Baehr was one of the great masters of beetle taxonomy of the past 50 years. His oeuvre is outstanding, in 384 publications Martin described 2098 new species and subspecies together with 76 higher ranked taxa. ... Green label with script title on the spine. = This book includes a chapter on the evolution theory of Darwin. Karl von Baer (1792-1876) was an important embryologist. Rubbing to boards and spine; some foxing; old owner's signature on front pastedown and another one on the first title verso; old library stamp - peculiarly pre-dating the year of publication - on second title, pencilled annotation on last blank recto, otherwise good. Marseille, Institut Colonial, 1920. 8vo. 370 pp., Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. = A very good copy. Rare.

Tokyo, (circa 1881-1882). Two volumes (of three). Japanese stitched binding (24.8 x 16.5 cm). With 67 coloured woodblock prints and text in Japanese. Original stitched wrappers. = A very pleasing collection of Japanese birds, many of them waterfowl. "This was Kono Bairei's first kacho, for in spite of the title it may be so classified, since many of the pictures emphasize the plants as much as the birds. The illustrations in these volumes are in black (with dilutions to grey), orange-brown (with dilutions), and vaguely perceptible tinting of the grays with green or blue. Being printed from the same block... the effects are extremely life-like and pleasing" (Barlett and Shohara). Complete copies would comprise three volumes, with 100 plates. Some 20 plates are double-paged. In fine condition. OCLC reports a complete set in the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art only. Barlett and Shohara, Japanese Botany, p. 529. In Russian with Latin nomenclature. Spine a bit frayed, tiny number written in the top margin of the title page, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Roma, Tipografia Nazionale, 1883. 8vo (22.0 x 15.7 cm). Title page, 9 pp.; one folded coloured map. Contemporary pebbled blue half cloth over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. = A detailed account of the earthquake that occured on this Mediterranean (Tyrrhenian) island on 28 July 1883. Two villages were destroyed. The island is further known for its volcanic activity (hot springs and mud flows). The last serious eruption was in the early 14th century. Offprint from the Bollettino del R. Corpo geol. d'Italia. A good copy. Rare.

Pictorial cloth. = The first five chapters are on various aspects of the life of the American entomologist, ornithologist and evolution theorist Darlington; this is followed by 16 scholarly papers (mainly taxonomical and zoogeographical) on various groups of Coleoptera and Hymenoptera. This is the original edition, published as volume 33 of the Series Entomologica, chief editor K. A. Spencer. Much less common than the Springer edition, which is uncommon itself. Library stamp on half title and title page, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

[ii], 244, cxvii, [ii]; [ii], 303 pp, with numerous tables. later blind half cloth over marbled boards. = Published by the Dutch Meteorological Office, this work covers two years of meteorological observations in various places in the Netherlands, and other European localities. The first volume including the meteorology of Indonesia (Palembang) between 1850 and 1856. Numerous data are presented in tables, the general conclusions are written in Dutch. A work like this, with numerous factual data, remains important in view of current climatological theories. Small cancelled blindstamp on the title pages, otherwise a very good copy.

Gilt title on the spine. = An uncommon contemporary bound copy of this important monograph on the macroscopic and microscopic aspects of the fishes' electric organ. The author got his specimens from the river Nile and from the Gambia. Spine much rubbed with some loss at the head and foot. Rectangular clipping in the front free endpaper, smaller, old paper clipping with repair in the title page. Otherwise a good copy. Dean I, p. 63.

The plates are photolithographic reproductions of original engraved proof plates by F. P. Nodder, James Miller, J. F. Miller, and John Cleveley that were never published. The set is bound in uniform black buckram with gilt lettering on spine, reading: Cook's First voyage. Australian plants, and the plate numbers contained in each volume. = One of only 300 sets produced, being the first published edition of nearly all the botanical illustrations by Banks and Solander on Australian plants. This set is the first substantial selection made from copper plates engraved under Joseph Banks' direction between 1772 and 1784. Most plates are double-sized panorama views of characteristic landscapes and habitats. David Armitage Bannerman (1886-1979) is best-known for his monographs of the Birds from the British islands, Tropical West Africa, Cyprus, etc., etc. Uncut. The plate numbered VIII is placed before VII, as always. Uncommon.
