The Third Texas Cavalry was very active in the Western campaigns. This account features the organization of the unit, accounts of battles in Missouri, the Siege of Corinth, the Battle of Iuka, the surrender of Vicksburg, the Battle of Yazoo City, Kilpatrick's Raid, the Atlanta Campaign and the end of the war. Barron recalls the soldiers' lives in camp and in the field. Nevins, Vol. 1, pp.54 –"Even though based for the most part on memory, and occasionally drifting off on dramatic tangents, this narrative is a standard source for Texas in the Civil War."

George W. Bailey was born in 1844 in Bibb County (Macon area), Georgia. He was the son of Samuel T. Bailey. He writes on his life as a poor man trying to raise sheep in Texas in 1880:
"I do not like the sheep business as well as I thought I should, but should stick to it if my health would persist on, although it is a fearful life to live especially for one like myself who has but a little money to invest and has to work his way up, for such a one it is the same thing day in and day out and sometimes he sees no one for a month at a time, except the one he is to work for. … There is money in the business, but there is also great risks to run for sheep in this country are liable to die with the diseases or a cold storm may kill them. Samuel Willard Bridgham (1813-1870), a partner in the New York banking firm of Jacob Little & Co., became Secretary, Director and General Superintendent of the Women's Central Relief Association (WCRA), the New York City branch of the U. S. Sanitary Commission. This is a scrapbook he compiled, containing 28 photographs, 20 printed and manuscript documents, 6 original letters and 3 badges, many relating to the women behind much of the effort. Two items relate to the NY Colored Troops regiments.

[New York?]: [No publication information] [Circa 1885-1890] Photograph 15 x 21 cm. mounted on curved cabinet card 17.5 x 22.4 cm with gilt edges. Photographer's name (C. W. Bridgham) is blind-stamped into the image. Light spotting and age toning to the mount. Very good.
OCLC shows no holdings. Rare Book Hub shows no auction or catalog listings. Some of Bridgham's work is in the collection of the New York Public Library. The Mission has the new peaked roof erected by Father Angelo Delfino Casanova in 1884. It does not have piled up stones on the side shown in 1890 or stone steps shown in 1905 photographs. [Texas][Cattle] Contract to pasture and feed cattle. June 1, 1872. Hand written contract between Brooks, Knox & Co., of Gonzales, Texas and John Bradford of Whiting, Jackson County, Kansas. One sheet 10 x 16 in. folded to four leaves 5 x 8 in. Docketing information on the last page. Has been folded. Small tear not affecting text; glue reidue, else very good.
Nineteenth century manuscript pasturage contracts for Texas cattle driven to Kansas are rare. This shows how cattle moved from Texas up to Kansas for sale. Brooks, Knox & Co. were merchants in Gonzales, Texas and who appear in a Texas Supreme Court decision in 1872. Whiting is in northeast Kansas and currently has a population of 208.
