Don Bailey first encountered Margaret Laurence's writing while serving a sentence for armed robbery in Warkworth penitentiary, and met her on his release in 1969. Their friendship lasted until her death in 1987, and Bailey here tries to "remember and recreate the Margaret I knew in a truthful way. . . . My goal in committing these memories to the page is an attempt to give some small sense of who Margaret Laurence, the human being, was. To me at least."
