Blindstamped covers note "Encyclopaedia Metropolitana". Spine notes "Encyclopaedia of Manufactures and Machinery by Barlow and Babbage" with "Encyclopaedia Metropolitana" at base (all in worn gilt). Attribution of 1848 date and printer are based on the differences in pagination between the 1836 and 1848 printings by Barlow of this volume. Generally clean and lightly browned internally, noting a marginal hole in pages 315-317 (not affecting text), plates 40 and 45 badly foxed with (plate 40 bound in backwards), plate 83 torn into the image and foxed (no loss), and plate 86 chipped at the edges but with no loss. A Midsummer Night's Press was founded in New Haven CT in 1991 Hand-printing on a letterpress, it published broadsides of poems by Nancy Willard, Joe Halderman, and Jane Yolen, among others, in signed, limited editions of 126 copies, numbered 1-100 and lettered A-Z. In 1993, the publisher moved to NY and the press went into hiatus. Given it's short life time we have been unable to determine how many copies of this broadside made it into circulation.

This volume contains the article "Microscopic Theory of Superconductivity" found on pages 162-164 by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1972 "for their jointly developed theory of superconductivity, usually called the BCS-theory". This article was the first major published piece related to the theory, which was later discussed in more detail in their major and most important paper on the subject "Theory of Superconductivity" which appeared in the next volume of the journal.

At least one story is set in Salmon Falls, in New England. Charming, fun read for the technologically minded, and with the illustration of a cupid on a telegraph on the cover, who can go wrong?
