Complete set of 110 engraved plates (of 108) with ink library stamps in the plate.Victorian re-issue of the Duke of Marlborough's Gemmarum antiquarum delectus, first published in 1783. The plates were drawn by Giovanni Battista Cipriani and stipple engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi.The images record a selection of the carved gemstones in the collection of George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough. The cameos and intaglios show portraits of Roman emperors, Greek philosophers, gods and goddesses from Greek and Roman mythology. This volume corresponds exactly to the copy scanned at the Internet Archive.Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815), was an Italian engraver who specialized in the delicate toning effects of stipple engraving. Very good set of this fine British flora, the first to rival James Sowerby's English Botany from 1791. Complete with 509 hand-coloured copperplates engraved by Charles Mathews after botanical illustrations by Mathews, Isaac Russel (an Oxford glass painter) and William Alfred Delamotte. The plates were reputedly hand-coloured by Baxter's daughters and daughter-in-law. Rare copy of this delightful Georgian oddity
(Listed by Francis Douce as example "XII," chapter 8, page 119, The Dance of Death, 1833.)
With 51 woodcuts in a distinctive octagonal frame.
Bewick's copy of Holbein's Dance of Death was published by his mentor T. Hodgson in 1793. The woodcuts were re-used for new editions in 1795 and 1801 by printer Robert Bassam, and were probably destroyed in a fire in his printshop in 1803.The plates here include a version of Bewick's original frontispiece with numerous skeletons leading royalty and aristocracy out of a castle town to a grave. William Matthew Hart (1830-1908) was a bird illustrator and lithographer who worked for John Gould from 1851. He began by making the patterns for the lithographic plates for Gould's monograph on Hummingbirds, as well as working on The Birds of Great Britain with Henry Constantine Richter. By 1870 Hart had become Gould's chief artist and lithographer.
