Description:
First Editions in Publisher Presentation Bindings.
When President Grant penned his memoirs in early 1885 – racing against his impending death to finish the project – he did so with his trusted and controversial aide, Adam Badeau, at his side. Grant's books concluded with the Civil War because of his death in July.
So, Badeau picked up the topic himself and published a finishing "life memoir" in 1888. Whether Grant so intended it or not, the three volumes tell one story.
The design of Grant in Peace by Hubbard Brothers of Philadelphia closely copied Charles Webster Company's "shoulder strap" design for the The Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant, including matching green cloth and an exact copy of the Congressional Gold Medal placed in gold leaf on the front boards.
Rumor has it there was a great deal of legal saber-rattling between the two publishers over the physical appearance of Badeau's book.
This set includes all three books in their collectible publisher's presentation bindings, and again the… Read More

1st edition, 377p., frontispiece, illustrations, (Monaghan-2904). Nicely Inscribed and Signed -- to the Author's Son!
Barton's classic account of Abraham Lincoln's relationships with women digs deeper than simply recounting his love affairs with Mary Todd and others. Barton delves deep into the lives of Lucy and Nancy Hanks, his stepmother Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln, young Julia Taft and Emilie Todd Helm. A collector's copy; some pages uncut; dust jacket clipped but bright and unchipped; interior clean; one corner bumped; spine of book some soil; else very good. Quite scarce indust jacket!

Description:
George S. Bryan's The Great American Myth is the classic interpretation of Lincoln's assassination as a simple conspiracy, carried out by John Wilkes Booth acting on his own and dying in the Garret barn.

Bryan spent years studying and researching this neglected period in American History. In addition to undertaking a more thorough search of contemporary newspapers, Bryan had access to previously unknown and unused material, including the John T. Ford papers. Mr. Bryan was also fortunate to obtain first-hand information from two men who knew Booth, and a signed statement from Booth's nephew who had never before spoken for publication.

Cover art includes a previously unpublished photograph of Lincoln's funeral procession in Chicago. Noted authority William Hanchett provides an insightful essay, viewing the assassination through the eyes of Lincoln's biographers since 1865.

An essential book for anyone interested in this event. This is an Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, Inc. reprint. As New.
