Description:
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2010. First Edition. 458pp. Quarto [26 cm] Tan cloth with the title stamped in black on the backstrip. Fine/Fine. Signed by the author on the half-title. The story of America's westward migration is a powerful blend of fact and fable. Over the course of three decades, almost a million eager fortune-hunters, pioneers, and visionaries transformed the face of a continent—and displaced its previous inhabitants. The people who made the long and perilous journey over the Oregon and California trails drove this swift and astonishing change. In this magisterial volume, Will Bagley tells why and how this massive emigration began. While many previous authors have told parts of this story, Bagley has recast it in its entirety for modern readers. Drawing on research he conducted for the National Park Service's Long Distance Trails Office, he has woven a wealth of primary sources—personal letters and journals, government documents, newspaper reports, and folk… Read More

Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2002. First Edition. 493pp. Quarto [26 cm] 1/2 tan cloth over tan boards with the title stamped in red on the front board and backstrip. Award-winning, riveting account of the attack on the Baker-Fancher wagon train by Mormons in the local militia and a few Paiute Indians. Description:
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2012. First Edition. 464pp. Quarto [26 cm] Tan cloth with the title stamped in black on the backstrip. Fine/Fine. During the mid-nineteenth century, a quarter of a million travelers—men, women, and children—followed the "road across the plains" to gold rush California. This magnificent chronicle—the second installment of Will Bagley's sweeping Overland West series—captures the danger, excitement, and heartbreak of America's first great rush for riches and its enduring consequences. With narrative scope and detail unmatched by earlier histories, With Golden Visions Bright Before Them retells this classic American saga through the voices of the people whose eyewitness testimonies vividly evoke the most dramatic era of westward migration. Traditional histories of the overland roads paint the gold rush migration as a heroic epic of progress that opened new lands and a continental treasure house for the advancement of civilization. Yet, according to Bagley,… Read More

Logan: Utah State University Press, 2008. First Edition. 316pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Black cloth with silver stamped titles on the backstrip. Fine/Fine. Signed by the author on the half-title. In the depths of the Great Depression, McCarthy brought the Denver & Rio Grande Western - 'The Scenic Line of the World' - back from the brink. Founded by visionary General William Palmer in 1870 as the nation's first narrow-gauge railroad, Colorado's 'Baby Road' became a vital link in the national transportation system. The D&RGW went through the Rockies - not around them - developing resources, fighting corporate wars, and helping build communities. After corruption and incompetence brought it to its knees, McCarthy turned it into a paragon of mid-century railroading, represented by the streamlined, Vista-Domed California Zephyr. The halcyon days of railroads have passed, but the legend of the Denver & Rio Grande Lives on. Crossing the Continental Divide, the storied line hauled away vast mineral wealth but had… Read More

Glendale: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1925. First Edition. 230pp. Octavo [22.5 cm] Green cloth with title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. Well written memoir by the early Oregon pioneer and Michigan promoter, who's travels also took him to Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro and around the Cape. "The autobiography was written by Mr. Ball in his eightieth year, 1874, being taken from scanty diaries kept on his trips; old letters, and from memory. It was written in a journal and the manuscript is more legible than the writing of many a younger man. It is not only of local historical value but of national interest, dealing with the early history of New England, where he was born, early Michigan and pioneer western history, Mr. Ball having been a member of the third expedition to cross the Rocky Mountains." - 'Grand Rapids Chronicle' May 29, 1925.

Originally published in Nineteenth Century, a magazine published in London, England, vol. 15 under title: A new view of Mormonism. Uncommon, for the ear, a pro-Mormon work from an English gentile and member of British Parliament. After Barclay's positive trip to the Territory, he felt compelled to write this glowing work. Begins with a brief description of the early history of Mormonism and some of its tenants. "Mr. James W Barclay an English member Parliament has been publishing his impressions of the Mormons in the Nineteenth Century and they are highly favorable. He maintains moreover that the hostility to the Mormons among Americans Is in the inverse ratio of knowledge of them. The further east he went the greater he found it He was deeply moved by the wonders wrought in Utah valley by Mormon industry and the beauty and comfort… Read More
