Description:
First Edition of this winner of the 1975 National Book Award in History.
Inscribed "with best regards", signed and dated by the author. The recipient, a student pursuing his MPA at Harvard where Bailyn was a professor at the time, had previously written in his name and date, hence a difference in hand-writing in the inscription.
Spine a bit creased but book is tight and seemingly unread. Near fine in little rubbed, near fine dust wrapper.
Books signed by Bailyn are scarce indeed.
Few historians since World War II have left an imprint on that field of study that rivals Professor Bailyn's. In his classic 1967 work, "The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution," Bailyn reshaped the study of the origins of the American Revolution, maintaining that the ideology of liberty and freedom was ingrained in the colonists, displacing Charles A Beard's then dominant theory that the American Revolution was primarily a matter of class warfare and that the rhetoric of freedom was meaningless.

Description:
Macmillan: New York, 1915. First edition.
Signed "with the cordial regards of" Beard and dated January 12, 1921.
Beard was one of the intellectual leaders of the Progressive movement and of American liberalism. This work, a sequel to Beard's magnum opus An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution, focuses on the nation's early political history from the adoption of the Constitution through the end of the Jefferson administration. In it, Beard places somewhat more emphasis on the philosophical context of political struggles, but he nevertheless reaffirmed his view of the importance of economic interests in governmental action.
A good copy, spine tips and corners rubbed, rear board a little marked, front and rear hinge started. Still a scarce first, especially signed.

First Edition. Two volumes. The author's first book.
Systematic Series, ed. by the University Faculty of Political Science in Columbia College. Volume 1: Sovereignty and Liberty; Volume 2: Government.
An unusually fresh, tight and bright copy, near fine with a little wear to spine tips and corners, boards a little marked, previous owner's bookplate in both volumes.
John W. Burgess was central to the postbellum rise of American political science, and today he is considered a founding figure of the field.
Burgess and professors at the Columbia College School of Political Science were responsible for founding the American Academy of Political Science, which served as an alumni association for Columbia's new graduate school. The first political science journal in the United States, Political Science Quarterly, was launched at Columbia in 1886. Over the next quarter century, the Quarterly, which Burgess edited and wrote for, professionalized the fledgling discipline and gave scholars a place to publish… Read More

Description:
The Gehenna Press: Northampton, MA 1963. Limited edition to 300 numbered copies, this is #22. Not to be confused with the subsequent unnumbered trade edition. Colophon illustrated by Press Founder Leonard Baskin. A presentation copy from Baskin, signed and inscribed "for Louis". Though not certain, it seems likely that the recipient is Baskin's close friend Louis Smith. Smith (known as Smitty) ran a framing, glazing and art supply store in Northampton, and between 1955 and 1974, Baskin engraved a series of rooster illustrations for Smith's shop. In 1999, this series was printed under the title "Smitty's Cocks" in a limited signed edition, noting "The friendship between the Smiths and Baskin was legendary and fruitful. These special labels adorned the letterheads, billheads and...backs of pictures framed at Smith Glass & Mirror."Illustrator Barry Moser also credits Smith with introducing him to Baskin, a collaboration that would inspire Moser to found the Pennyroyal Press.31 pp, brown cloth spine… Read More
