Description:
Orig. pub. Atlanta, 1875. Reprinted 1976. Print on Demand Edition 2017. (vi), 32, (v), xxvi pp. Eufaula, Alabama sits on a bluff on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River which is the boundary between Alabama and Georgia in that area. When the author wrote this brief history, Eufaula (formerly Irwinton) had been in existence less than forty years. This history traces Eufaula's development from its origins in the 1820s as an outpost of civilization, through its development as a prosperous agricultural and mercantile community, to its situation at the close of the Civil War. The text includes lists of officials of the municipal government, churches, benevolent societies, school officials, and railroad time tables. An unusual feature of this reprint is the reproduction of the advertisements from the original edition, which give a nostalgic and colorful picture of the commercial life of the community in the author's day.

Orig. pub. Columbia 1923. Reprinted 1980, 1992, 1999. Print on Demand Edition 2015. (ii), x , 612 pp., index + maps, illus. A pine tree on the north bank of the Black River, called the King's Tree by an early explorer, became the focal point of settlement in what is now Williamsburg County, and gave the name to the county seat. This history gives an account of settlement under the Lords Proprietors and the names of everyone who had settled there by 1737. It is particularly rich in genealogical material, contained in sketches of individuals, lists of county officers, ministers and members of churches, early documents, settlers and officials, wills with names of family members involved, sketches of Revolutionary War officials, and land claims and owners in 1788. Genealogical information is also found in the Census of 1790; taxpayers and amounts paid in 1811; Civil War muster rolls with officers, deaths, and excerpts from diaries; and lists of teachers, officers of banks, and soldiers in the…

Owen in his Bibliography (1898) called "the most valuable contribution to the history of the State yet made." In the first section of the book, he gives a brief historical review of the history of the state from 1540 to 1872 dealing with exploration, the Indians, natural resources, economic development, the territorial period, and state politics in general. In the second section entitled "The Counties of Alabama," Brewer presents the history of each county giving its creation, its location, its aboriginal history, its resources, names of county officials over the years, and approximately five hundred biographical sketches of prominent citizens. The third section entitled "The War Between the States," presents a brief sketch of each regiment of infantry and cavalry with the names of field officers, staff…

The set of 3 vols., 1500+ pp. This three-volume reference work of over 1500 pages is based on official government records on file in the Virginia Land Office and on documents in the Archives Department of the Virginia State Library.
