Description:
San Francisco: Sufism Reoriented, 1966. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. Uncommon pamphlet collecting various statements advising against the use of hallucinogens by the Indian spiritual leader Meher Baba (1894-1969), an important figure in the 1960s counterculture. Baba warns that LSD and related drugs cannot provide a shortcut to true spiritual awakening, and indeed may only lead one further from such a goal. An interesting counterargument to the view, then prevalent among advocates of psychedelic experimentation, that such substances possess the de facto power of entheogenic revelation. San Francisco: Sufism Reoriented, 1966. First edition. Saddle-stapled in light pink printed self-wrappers, 8-1/4 x 5-1/2 in. 11pp. Light toning and soiling to wraps, a few minor spots of interior soiling. Very good. This copy lacking the cancel slip frequently seen mounted at base of p.6; thus possibly an earlier state.

Description:
NY: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1982. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Octavo; 216pp.; Orange boards, black quarter-cloth, in dust jacket. Signed by Babbitt on the title page. Herbert Rowbarge details the successful but unhappy life of the titular character through the lens of his adult twin daughters. Having been separated from his own twin brother at birth, Rowbarge spends most of his life struggling under the burden of his unknown loss. Babbitt identified Herbert Rowbarge as her personal favorite among her books. Light shelfwear, minor waterspotting to textblock top, and a couple of minor spots of soiling to front endpaper. In a price-clipped jacket showing moderate rubbing. A very good plus copy in like jacket of this elegantly written short novel, something of an outlier in the oeuvre of a writer best known for Tuck Everlasting and her other young-adult novels. An exemplary work of prose, uncommon signed.

London: Michael Joseph, 1972. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. First edition of the sole screenplay by American writer James Baldwin (1924-1987), an adaptation of Malcolm X and Alex Haley's The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965) that began as a passion project but was ultimately quashed by the studios and led to Baldwin's lasting embitterment with the film industry. London: Michael Joseph, 1972. First UK edition, preceding the American edition of 1973. 166pp. Octavo; blue textured-paper boards; silver spine titles; dust jacket. Light spotting/soiling to top of textblock; light bumping to spine ends. Very good or better in a near fine jacket, price-clipped. Baldwin first began work on a play version of the Autobiography in 1967; after the rights to the book were sold to Columbia Pictures in 1968, they approached him about adapting a screenplay instead. He accepted, only to find himself soon embroiled in creative conflicts with the studio, who demanded a highly sanitized treatment…
