Description:
[Anti-Racism] [African American - Education] [Affirmative Action] Archive of 4 magazines, handouts, and pamphlets discussing the Bakke Supreme Court decision. Bakke, 1978, is when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that a university's use of racial "quotas" in its admissions process was unconstitutional, but a school's use of "affirmative action" to accept more minority applicants was constitutional in some circumstances. The case involved the admissions practices of the Medical School of the University of California at Davis. The medical school reserved 16 out of 100 seats in its entering class for minorities, including "Blacks," "Chicanos," "Asians," and "American Indians." The rigid admissions quota was administered by a special school committee. Allan Bakke, a white applicant, was twice denied admission to the medical school even though his MCAT scores, GPA, and benchmark scores were "significantly higher" than those of some minority applicants recently admitted. Domestically she aided women and children through the settlement program at Hull House, but she also took a global approach through her leadership in the Women's International League of Peace and Freedom. She was an American economist, sociologist and pacifist. Balch combined an academic career at Wellesley College with a long-standing interest in social issues such as poverty, child labor, and immigration, as well as settlement work to uplift poor immigrants and reduce juvenile delinquency. She moved into the peace movement at the start of World War I in 1914, and began collaborating with Jane Addams of Chicago. She became a central leader of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) based in Switzerland, for which she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946.

Description:
John Ball. In the Heat of the Night. First edition. Harper and Row: New York. 1965. Original purple dust jacket design by Luiz Woods. 184 pages. Measures 8.25" x 6" inches. The story follows Virgil Tibbs, a Black police detective solving a murder case in notoriously racist small town South Carolina. The book and its 1967 film adaptation engaged directly with the civil rights movement, making it a pop culture landmark and Tibbs a much beloved character. Played by Sidney Poitier in the film, Tibbs was a well-educated, well-dressed professional Black man doing his work without apology or deference to white supremacy. The impact of this representation was profound, "Young black people in northern cities responded to the film in a much more visceral way than the whites did. This was the first time a black actor was wearing the fancy suit and being looked up to." (Jewison) The story extended its generational reach with a television series that ran from 1988-95. An iconic example of the interplay between pop… Read More

[LGBTQ] [Pulp] Ann Weldy writing under the pen name Ann Bannon. Women in the Shadows. Greenwich, CT: Gold Medal Books, 1959. First edition. 176 pages, about 4" x 7." Soft cover in hot pink shows a woman's shadowy profile with another woman's face interposed over it, her expression grim. Text beneath title reads: "Their dark and troubled loves could flourish only in secret." Ann Bannon began writing as a young, closeted housewife beginning to explore her own sexual identity. Her pulp novels were formative for lesbians coming of age during the 1960s, providing complex and humanizing portraits of queer women, anomalous at the time. Her success and female-positive take earned her the title "Queen of LEsbian Pulp". In her later years, reflecting on the series, Bannon wrote, "When I first started writing these books, I was a woman in love - not just with a few individuals, but with a whole community, a whole time and place, the entire world full of wonderful women and endearing gay men. I idealized them… Read More
