Description:
London: Charles Knight,, 1833. In the original wrappers Octavo (175 x 115 mm), pp. 31. Original buff printed paper wrappers, sewn as issued. Fore edges of wrappers soiled with a few faint spots to covers, very occasional foxing to contents, else notably bright and clean. First separate edition. On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures was first published in 1832, and second and third editions soon followed that same year. This pamphlet comprises three additional chapters by Babbage that examine questions of political economy and which were newly included in the third edition. To make the text available to owners of the first and second editions it was also issued separately, as here, to supplement their own copies. The work is relatively scarce in institutions: WorldCat and Library Hub locate five in the UK (BL, Cambridge, UoL, LSE, Sheffield) and just five further copies worldwide (one apiece in Australia, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, and the US, the latter at the Baker Library, Harvard).… Read more

Description:
Paris: Dondey-Dupre,, 1834. Octavo (203 x 131 mm). Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges speckled brown. Boards scuffed, contents slightly foxed. An excellent copy. First edition of Isoard's French translation of On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures - Babbage's most successful lifetime publication, selling 3,000 copies. Prompted by the demands for precision in the construction of his first calculating engine, Babbage had made a conscientious and detailed survey of factories and workshops both in England and Europe. An encyclopaedic record of craft, manufacturing, and industrial processes, as well as an analysis of the domestic organization of factories, the work demonstrates Babbage's remarkable prescience. He proposed many scientific management techniques for the first time, including subdivided work, cost accounting, and merit pay systems. He advocated the decimalization of currency, foresaw the role of tidal power as an energy source,… Read more

Description:
Brest: de l'imprimerie de Michel, imprimeur du Roi,, 1817. Octavo (202 x 123 mm). Contemporary sheep-backed bottle-green paper covered boards, flat spine, title gilt direct, compartments formed by a star and flower gilt roll, foliate centre-tool. Tables and diagrams to the text, bound with the half-title, advertisement/errata leaf at the rear. A little rubbed, light browning and foxing, heavy in places, throughout, but remains a very good copy. First and only edition. Uncommon, 4 copies only on WorldCat - BnF, NYPL, Fisher Library, Toronto, Danish Union Catalogue. Compiled by Babron (1772-1841), a frigate captain, who began work on it when 22, but was only able to finally publish after his retirement from the sea in 1813. In his introduction he explains that he became convinced that in France there "was no work which brought together in a single volume, at a moderate price, all of the practices of the naval art; that is a vade mecum to serve as a guide to young sailors". London: Luzac & Co.,, 1922. 2 volumes, octavo (208 x 137 mm). Contemporary moderate brown cloth, red leather labels. 5 half-tone plates and 2 plans (of Chanderi and Gwalior). Labels a little dry and slightly flaked, a touch of foxing to endpapers. A very good set, with a number of scholarly annotations between pp. 10 and 26 in vol. I, suggestive of someone proficient in Persian. First edition in book form of this landmark version of the Baburnama, the earliest example of autobiographical writing in world literature, the diary of Zahir-ud-Din Muhammad Babur (1483–1530), founder of the Mughal Empire and descendant of Timur, translated into English directly from the original Chagatai Turkish, the spoken language of the Andijan-Timurids; complete sets are extremely uncommon. Under the patronage of Akbar the Great (reigned 1556-1605) the Baburnama was translated into Persian, the literary language of the Mughal court, and English translations had been published that drew on that source. In her preface… Read more

Paris: Ernest Flammarion, Editeur,, 1914. The mathematical expectation of the speculator is zero Octavo. Original orange wrappers, spine and sides lettered in black, edges uncut. Black and white illustrations in the text. Joints a little rubbed, spine ends with a little wear. Paper stock lightly toned; a very good copy. First edition of this popularization of Bachelier's work on speculation. Bachelier summarized his main idea in a single sentence - "The mathematical expectation of the speculator is zero." Louis Bachelier (1870-1946) was an eminent French mathematician and a pioneer in the study of financial mathematics. During his studies at the Sorbonne he wrote his famous thesis, Théorie de la speculation (1900), in which he defined Brownian motion, predating Einstein by five years, and discussed its application to the evaluation of stock options. It was the first paper to use advanced mathematics in the study of finance, and was popularized in this volume, Le Jeu, La Chance et le Hasard (Games,… Read more
