Description:
Jacana 2012.. No inscriptions. a VG copy.. 352pp illustrated large format paperback. During the apartheid years the government employed many weapons against its opponents: imprisonment, banning, detention, assassination, and banishment. In a practice reminiscent of Tsarist and Soviet Russia, a large number of 'enemies of the state' were banished to remote areas, far from their homes, communities and followers. Here their existence became 'a slow torture of the soul', a kind of social death. This is the first study of an important but hitherto neglected group of opponents of apartheid, set in a global, historical and comparative perspective. It looks at the reasons why people were banished, their lives in banishment and the efforts of a remarkable group of activists led by Helen Joseph to assist them.

The Graaff-Reinet Levy comprised a maximum of 100 men. These forces were used to drive the Xhosa from the mountainous Amatola region. Image size 370mm wide x 260mm high, framed size 570mm x 460mm Sold framed (not recommended for overseas sale due to freight costs). This illustrates the Rifle Brigade landing in Algoa Bay on March 30th from where they moved to King Williams Town as needed reinforcements during the last stages of the 8th Frontier War under George Cathcart who had earlier succeeded Sir Harry Smith that year. As the painting shows, 1 RB was landed ashore by means of surf boats and the help of the native population (who were referred to at that time as 'Fingoes'). HM Steamship Megaera is clearly visible in the bay with smoke coming from her funnel. After landing, 1 RB encamped on the hill above Port Elizabeth where the Battalion prepared to move 'up country' which it did on 2 April. In early 1853 the Eighth Frontier War came to an end. I RB remained in Cape Colony until the end of the year… Read More

The original is in the possession of The Royal Green Jackets (Rifle) Museum in Winchester, UK,This illustrates the Rifle Brigade crossing a river. It is likely that this is the Orange River and that the picture is representative of Cathcart’s forces crossing the river in his campaign against Moshoeshoe in Lesotho. One wagon has crossed the river and is on its way, another is waiting to cross, one has come to grief in the mud, and men are crossing having removed their boots and trousers to avoid getting too wet!

Image size 535mm x 380mm, overall print size 575mm x 420mm, framed size 730mm x 585mm. Sold framed (not recommended for overseas sale due to freight costs). This famous picture illustrates a moment from the seminal event in the history of Eastern Cape settlement: the landing of the first sizable contingent of English settlers on the subcontinent. At the foot of the rise above the Bay are the tents that would shelter the 1820 Settlers temporarily, along with the wagons for their conveyance to the hinterland. The flag of the garrison at Fort Frederick is visible at the crest of the hill overlooking the scene. In the foreground, lighters laden with Settler men, women and children are battling through the waves from the notoriously unsafe anchorage. Cormorants soar above the waves, and swoop down. A breathtaking scene.
