A description of industrial and back yard meat processing, and also a sales mechanism for the wide range of B. Heller products. B. Heller and Co., founded in 1893, was a consulting chemist to the meat industry, supplying a variety of meat preserving needs, along with insecticides, furniture polish, and a rheumatism medicine. Over time their line of products expanded - they published the famous Heller's Guide for Ice Cream Makers (1909 ff.). In later editions, a publisher's glossary was appended at the rear, but not in this issue. Stated "Fourth Edition". A beekeeping manual, "being a Practical Treatise on the history and domestic economy of the honey-bee embracing a full illustration of the whole subject, with the most approved methods of managing this insect through every branch of its culture, the result of many years' experience." Some pages stained; otherwise internally quite good. In publisher's blind and gilt-decorated brown boards; some light wear to edges. Near very good. Pasted-in to the free front endpaper is a slip of blue paper with an ownership signature, "David Darrow's Book, West Eaton, 1856". David Darrow (1782-1870) was one of the founding fathers of West Eaton, a small town in Madison County, New York. [OCLC locates six copies of this fourth edition].

[New York: Bacardi Imports, Inc.; Woodrow Press, Inc, 1936. Small stapled pamphlet (15.5 x 11.5 cm.), 30 pages. Illustrated in color throughout. A promotional pamphlet for Bacardi, printed in New York City (an earlier also undated issue was printed in Havana). With a lengthy selection of cocktails, each based on one of Bacardi's seven rums. Also included are sections on proper glassware, bartending tips, and more. The booklet cites the New York Supreme Court decision of April, 1936, that a Bacardi Cocktail must be made with Bacardi. Light soil to wrappers, and a few small dog ears, otherwise very good. Scarce. [OCLC cites only one copy].

London: Saunders and Otley, 1838. Small octavo (17.7 x 11 cm.), xvi, 240, [4] pages. Illustrated with a color engraving frontispiece, woodcut title page, and forty wood engravings in the text. Publisher's advertisements at end. Second Edition, originally issued by the author in 1834. Samuel Bagster Jr. (1800-1835) was the son of a publisher of Bibles and other religious works. The Management of Bees was Bagster's first work, and remained in print until 1865. His second work on bees, Spiritual Honey from Natural Hives, was issued by Pickering in 1834. The author discuss the natural history of bees, and swarming, but is most interesting as a survey of historical methods of hive management, including the cottage system, storifying system, collateral bee-boxes, the hives of Mr. Huish, on ventilation, and finally the "Ladies' Safety Hive". Boston: White, Smith & Co, 1883. Quarto in wrappers (26 x 18 cm.), 104 pages. FIRST & ONLY EDITION of this vocal score with piano accompaniment. An ad appearing in the March 1884 issue of the publisher's Folio Magazine described The Berry-Pickers as a "new and original operetta in two art--, adapted to the use of young people, and designed to illustrate scenes in country life" (page 142). A later issue of the same periodical indicates "The Berry Pickers was produced for the first time entire at Union Hall, Boston, January 30, before a large and enthusiastic audience. The presentation of the operetta was a most gratifying surprise to all who witnessed it. The delight caused by many of the numbers can hardly be over-rated, and the fact that many of them were re-demanded proves the success of the work." The first American book on silos and ensilage, from the owner of Winning Farm in Billerica, Mass, and Virginia Stock Farm in Sussex County, Virginia. Original burgundy cloth, blind-decorated and gilt-titled. Near fine.

Brooklyn, NY: Bailey Refrigeration Company, Inc, 1947. Ring bound cardstock ( x cm.) [??] pages. Title page plus five original photographs, laid-down on card stock, and hand-colored cover photo illustration. Depicts the main dining room and related equipment room for the air conditioning apparatus on the S.S. City of Lisbon. A promotional piece for the Bailey Refrigeration Company, Inc. and presumably made in a small number. Leaves are pulling away from the rings at the wholes (not affecting the photographs, except for the cover); otherwise very good.

This separate, two volume, collection of culinary and cocktail recipes, this time focused on South America. Baker's writings on exotic cocktails recipes are second to none. Some light sunning to spines of blue cloth, otherwise very good. Lacking the slipcase. With the bookplate of famed hotelier Ferdinand Sperl.

A promotional book for the Baker Extract Company, makers of flavoring extracts, toilets, waters, etc., with offices in multiple states but the Laboratory was in Portland, Maine. Recipes include cakes, ice creams, custards and candies. Interestingly, a street address for the company is not provided, despite the inclusion of a coupon which "MUST be sent direct to our Laboratory, with the owner's name". Some light soiling and small chips to corners of some pages. Staples rusting. Stapled in gray wrappers with a humorous illustration. Good or a bit better. Scarce. New York: Crown Publishers, 1946. Two volumes. Octavos (23 x 16 cm.), 216 & 220 pages. FIRST TRADE EDITION; the original limited edition was published by Derrydale Press in 1939. There were two Gentleman's Companions compiled by Charles Baker, the journalist, traveler and collector of food and drink lore. Each Companion was a set of two volumes. This is the first set, a collection of "exotic" culinary and cocktail recipes. The later, second set was focused on South American food and drink. The Washington Post said, "with whimsicality and an extraordinary fidelity to detail, Mr. Charles H. Baker Jr. has done The Gentleman's Companion, a two-volume work on fine drinking and eating. Years of world-wide research are in these splendid books with the strong implication that Mr. Baker's liver never let him down." Baker's writings on exotic cocktails recipes are second to none. In this, Baldessari's second artists' book, the text is comprised of a description/set of instructions for a game of choosing (in this case green beans). This is accompanied by nine photographs in which an anonymous finger points to one of three green beans. Stiff white wrappers with very slight discoloration to staples, else in fine condition throughout. Scarce.

Stated "Reprint Edition" but evident FIRST EDITION, though the addenda attempts to sew doubt. The Brothers of the Book Society was founded in 1898 by Laurence Conger Woodworth (1874-1924) with the purpose of publishing noteworthy books. This work is an anachronism, with recipes for various alcoholic beverages, mostly punches, purporting to be a reprint of a found work from 1784. The colophon states that the hoax was perpetrated by Kendall Banning (1879-1944). The "Addenda" laid-in at rear is interesting as Woodworth responds to the colophon, the "writer of the 'explanation' accepted Mr. Banning's statement that the original of this reprint was a hoax. An elaborate program of events for the eleventh annual meeting of the Hotel Men's Mutual Benefit Association, held in May, 1890 at Boston's great hotels, the Parker House, Hotel Vendome, and American House. The H.M.M.B.A. was founded in 1879 to offer hotel workers insurance plans; it was later to become the Bankers Life and Casualty Company. The program and menu for the three-day meeting includes the meeting itself, music, speakers, presentations, carriage excursions, etc. The painted wooden boards hold die-cut 'booklets' dedicated to the Convention, headquartered at the Parker House, the Eleventh Annual Banquet, held at the American House, and the Reception, held at the Hotel Vendome.
