This is an abstract of a paper which Babbage submitted to the Geological Society and which was read before the December 14, 1836 meeting of that Society. This paper represents Babbage's diverse interests, other than those connected with the construction of the analytical engine. In it, Babbage describes an investigation into the source of many impressions left in the channel of a stream and considered by the country people to have been made by horses' hoofs.

Recent blue decorative boards. . Octavo. This is one of the few papers which shows Babbage as a capable experimentalist and as a master of classification. During the period when Babbage was preoccupied with the construction of the calculating engine, he and John Herschel undertook to investigate the ten earthshaking discovery of Arago: a copper disc rotating next to a magnetic needle tends to "drag" the needle from its position of rest. In the course of this investigation Babbage and Herschel came very close to discovering electromagnetic induction, seven years before Faraday. They even went as far as concluding that time delay and magnetic change must be responsible for the rotation, but fell short of realizing that a totally new phenomenon need be postulated: the induction of eddy currents.

Elmesly; Paris: Debure, 1777 First edition of a controversial work by the astronomer and one-time mayor of Paris, Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793). In a series of ten letters addressed to Voltaire, Bailly examines the early peoples of Asia and determines that they were the source of arts and sciences. The Lettres are an expansion of some of the ideas expressed in the author's Histoire de l'astronomie ancienne, depuis son origine jusqu'à l'établissement de l'école d'Alexandre (1775), utilizing new data. The earlier work had brought him into conflict with Voltaire, and Voltaire's letters to Bailly also appear here for the first time. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, edges stained red. . Octavo. Light worming along lower edge of back cover and front joint. Old ink ownership mark on title-page, later bookplate on front pastedown. Marginal tear in I6. Overall a very good, attractive copy.

Baker (1866-1956) was a British mathematician who served as Lowndean professor of astronomy and geometry (1914–36). His principal interest was in the theory of algebraic functions and related topics, and later in partial differential equations (related to what would become known as solitons), and Lie groups. "His treatise contains a wealth of information, including many special (sometimes almost forgotten) results and examples which are again of great interest to geometers, analysts, and physicists" (Zentralblatt MATH Database 1931 – 2001).
