Gift inscription "To George, Christmas 1948". From the collection of English mountaineer George Band, the youngest member of the successful team which conquered Mount Everest in 1953. Very Good. pp104 Very good in pictorial buff paper wrappers, hole punched through the top left corner for hanging on a cord, short tears at the staples; the pages are clean and bright. This book comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R.. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to France explains the presence of his books in the United Kingdom. Very Good 1938

Canadian Pacific Railway, 1907. pp 36 A pamphlet published by the Canadian Pacific Railway encouraging "energetic and enterprising" Scots to emigrate to Canada. This description of the country is by a journalist from The Scotsman newspaper who was invited by the president of the railway company to make a tour and report on "the progress and resources of the Dominion". Illustrated with black and white photographs. Very good in coloured card wrappers, creased and nicked to the edges but bright and complete. Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. This example is in a nineteenth century half leather binding with gilt decoration over brown cloth, with marbled edges. The binding is sound but the leather is worn to the corners and the spine label lost. Internally the text and illustrations are complete. The two plates of cells and the nerve centres of different classes of animal are damp stained, but the other pages are clean. With an extended chapter on the development and metamorphoses of cells. Ownership inscription to half title page of James Herbert Wilson, Harold Wilson's father's copy, later inherited. This book comes from the private collection of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his wife Mary who died recently at the age of 102. During his lifetime Harold Wilson kept the book in the Ashley Gardens mansion flat in Westminster that the couple shared until his death in 1995. A Restoration era play quarto from a collection compiled by the financier and book collector, Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (1778-1859) and rebound by 'T Connolly' of Dublin. [14], pp58. Incomplete, half title lacking and final 2 leaves replaced by an 19th century pen facsimile. Bound in half vellum over attractive marbled boards with black Morocco label, last quarter of the 19th century, binder's ticket of 'T Connolly, 10 Up. Ormond Quay, Dublin'. In good condition, title and final page soiled, some watermarks throughout. There are several contemporary annotations including red pen marks to the margins; 'London Acts' added to head of p44; the first two lines of the ode on page 48 are written out along with a note in the margin; and in the Epistle Dedicatory "the Author of the Short View" is noted to be 'Jeremiah Collier'. Performance of this play was forbidden by the Lord Chamberlain. From an extensive Irish collection of quarto plays. Good 1704
