Seattle: Argus Print, 1924. First edition. Quarto (9 x 12 inches). 41, [1]; 17, [1] pp. plus 16 pp. of illustrations (predominantly full page portraits). Publisher's patterned green wrappers with black cover lettering. Some edge wear (as is always the case as the text does not sit flush with the wrappers). Overall, an excellent copy. A finely written early history written by a true pioneer. "Clarence Bagley, the only child of Daniel and Susannah, was born in Troy Grove, Illinois, on November 30, 1843. At age nine, Clarence had a front-row seat while moving across the plains and Rocky Mountains to a new home near Salem, Oregon...In October 1860, Clarence was a strapping 17 years old when the family climbed aboard a buggy and headed north to Seattle... For a time banking attracted Clarence Bagley, then more newspaper work, and again a return to state employment. He also served as an alternate state commissioner for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Bagley's true love, however, remained writing… Read More

London/Philadelphia: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner/ J. P. Lippincott, 91910). First edition. Octavo. xii, 106 pp. Produced after the manner of a Persian manuscript, the pages within illuminated borders in soft colors and Oriental patterns. The title page with an elaborate arabesque in blue surrounding the lettering, other pages with an equal amount of color, variety and exuberance. Publisher's cream cloth, front entirely covered in a dense blue arabesque with lettering at the top, same lettering on the spine, rear with a simple blue border. A faultless copy of this beautiful book. At the turn of the century Laura Barney was a leading Bahai teacher in America. She is probably best known forr her having compiled a basic Bahai text entitled "Some Answered Questions" taken from her interviews with the Bahai saint in Acra 'Abdu'l-Baha between 1904 and 1906. This play focuses on one of the leading female figures in the development of the Bahai faith; Tahirih. She was amongst the first group of the Bab's… Read More

It is the second Bahai House of Worship ever constructed and the oldest one still standing. It is one of eight continental temples, constructed to serve all of North America. The temple was designed by French-Canadian architect Louis Bourgeois (1856–1930), who received design feedback from Abdu'l-Baha during a visit to Haifa in 1920. To convey the Bahai principle of the unity of religion, Bourgeois incorporated a variety of religious… Read More

Description:
Spokane: Bailey Studios, [ca. 1895]. Four boudoir cards measuring 8 x 5 inches. Two with the Bailey imprint and two without (found together so it is safe to presume Bailey was the photographer for all). One is a river scene, one is of the exterior of the James Glover mansion house and two are interior photographs of presumably the same house. Some light toning and soiling but very good. "Frank Clinton Bailey (also known as F.C. Bailey, Frank C. Bailey and listed as A.C. Bailey in some publications) probably started working as a photographer in Spokane, Washington, around 1880. Prior to setting up his own studio, he worked as a photographer and crayon artist at the E.E. Bertrand photo studio (owned by the photographer of the same name, who was also known as Edward E. Bertrand and E. Edison Bertrand) from at least 1888 until 1890 in Spokane. After 1890, he lived and worked at his own photo studio at 714 Riverside Ave. in Spokane until about 1896. Bailey likely sold his business after 1896. He… Read More

London and Bombay: Smith, Elder & Co., 1915. First edition. Liii, [1], 87, [1] pp. Publisher's plain brown boards with remains of paper spine label. Some pinhole worming, front endpaper excised but a very good and clean copy. A convoluted legal matter among the Muslims of the Bengal area. "The Muslim peasantry of eastern Bengal appears to have in part hung on its strong embrace of a powerful association between Islam and the plough. The Faraizi slogan langal jar, jami tar (“the land belongs to the tiller”) implied that bringing land under cultivation constituted the basis for a claim to its ongoing possession, or even to property in it. This idea was, as we have seen, hardly peculiar to the nineteenth century or exclusive to Muslim Bengal. But it was nonetheless a claim whose appeal to religious authority was unlikely to have found much of a foundation in the currents of Hanafi jurisprudence that had been elaborated in the period from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries when Muslim… Read More

Mexico [City]: D. Mariano Ontiveros, 1816. First edition. Small octavo. 128, 179-213, [11] pp. The break in the pagination is due to a printer's error and is present in all copies; no text missing. Modern quarter brown morocco over brown cloth, gilt spine lettering. This early account of the Jesuits in California prior to their expulsion in 1767 has at the end a list of subscribers, details of the costs of producing the book and a list of those to whom it was distributed. According to Cowan (207) only 1000 copies were distributed. After presenting his arguments in favor of the reestablishment of the Society of Jesus in New Spain, the famous jurist relates the history of the missions of Baja California in the form of a letter from “Nicolás” to “Lorenzo,” perhaps in remembrance of Tamaral and Carranco, protomartyrs of the Californias.
