Cowan (p 27, referring to the German edition): "Baegert, a Jesuit missionary, resided for 18 years in California. perhaps no man ever wrote an impersonal book with more bitterness of heart. According to his accounts the country was absolutely unfitted for habitation; it was inhabited by wild and ferocious beasts; peopled by inhospitable and cruel savages; water was unfit for use; wood was scarce; and the soil would not sustain life."

Softcover. Fine. Four-page booklet (6.25" x 3.5") advertising a lecture by a Kansas City-based Armenian-American who published several works on the subject of "Americanization." Baghdigian asks his audience to consider America's "spiritual mission" and "glorious destiny" and to remind themselves and others to appreciate freedom. Excerpts from press notices praise the lecture for being "filled with patriotism and love for his adopted country" and making "anyone who hears him have a finer conception of the word freedom and a fonder pride in the great country we are privileged to live in." The booklet is undated but states that Baghdigian is (or was) a lecturer for the Ridpath Homer Chautauqua in 1921-22. .

A beautiful volume on cartography illustrated throughout with a variety of maps of Europe and Asia dating from ancient times to the 16th century. From the Preface: "the following description and analysis of totem poles is restricted to one of the several nations of the North West Coast that are known to have practised the art of carving and erecting tall wooden memorials to their dead. Yet the scope of our study is implicitly wider, since the art of the Gitksan is merely a local variation upon a theme that is, in geography and history, more comprehensive. Our conclusions and comparisons for this reason are bound to shed some light on the growth and expansion of this aboriginal art on the whole North West Coast, and to invite the readers' attention to the problem of diffusion of culture all around the rim of the Pacific ocean.

Otherwise a lovely copy, with slight fraying of the cloth at the extremities and some glue staining and abrasion to the front hinge, which appears to have been repaired. The scarce first volume of this five-volume series of annual almanacs.

"Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary, and the present account...is one of the best illustrated English travels on China. The eight plates are from drawings by William Alexander, who also accompanied the embassy and later published his own work. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. Marbled boards with later leather spine, new endpapers. Stamp of the Isle of Wight Insitution on several pages. Title page, frontispiece, and some plates foxed (as often found), the remainder of the text quite clean. Map has a section meanuring about 1.5 x 3 inches missing from lower left, with some loss of content. A good reference copy. The author was the son of Sir John Barrow, who traveled and worked in China and South Africa and served in the British Admiralty, where he was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of exploration and discovery. The younger man followed in his father's footsteps as a traveler and writer, producing popular and well-received works on his travels in Ireland, Iceland, Northern Europe, and Austria, Lombardy, and Bavaria.

Baruch was an advisor to Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the New Deal era and played a role in the formation of the National Recovery Administration.
