The publisher is the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, who took this lad of 7 to Paris in 1776 on his diplomatic missionl. A classics education was arranged for the boy, but the last two years of their 9 year stay, now 16 he was apprenticed to the most famous printer in Paris for 2 years. Young Benjamin franklin Bache graduated from Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1787, winning prizes for translations in Latin along the way. He then took over the family printing business, under the watchful eye of his failing grandfather. At age 20 this is one of the first books he published, a school text for Latin beginners, listing himself as publisher. Nicely illustrated, with chapters on Finnmark, Trondheim, Romsdal, etc. No other copies on the internet as of this writing..

An old, photographic travel book, more than half in Norway and the remainder in Russia. Delightful old photos. Slight edgewear, but clean and tight inside. Decorated lime cloth, with a man & a multitude of suitcases running for a steamer on a mountainous fjord. Some wear at the spine ends and corners. .

Bewick set a new standard for quality woodcuts with this famous book, first published in 1790. The binding has raised bands on the spine and bright gilt title and author lettering, and gilt emblems in the other four spine panels. Handsewn Japanese silk endbands. Hand marbled endpapers from Scotland. Just barely a quarton at ten inches tall. .

Original green cloth, with bright gilt letters on front and spine in the same style as the variant yellow binding. Minimal edge wear. Professionally rebacked, very solid hinges with new sendpapers. Very clean and tight inside, with no foxing or browning or prior owner marks. Printed at the Japan Gazette office in Yokohama. Volume one purlisbed in 1880; volume two in 1881. The author was a Scottish publisher, journalist and author, most of his career in Japan and China. He claims the distinction of founding the first newspaper in Japanese language, which advocated political reforms. Not surprisingly, the authorities pushed him out of the newspaper business and he settled in Shanghai. He returned to Yokohama in 1880, the year of his death. RARE early photogravures (circa 1880) by the famous French photographer Bonfils (1831-1885), of Palestine. The individual photos , 4 1/2 " by 6 1/2 ", are mounted on heavy gray card stock , a few of which are chipped. The photos are bright and clear, no foxing or stains. Enclosed in a cloth box with Palestinian woman and palm tree on the front, and bright title , Palestine, in gilt. The sides of the box were flimsy and had deteriroated, so the box was rebuilt with heavy cloth sides to protect the plates. Only two other sets on the internet at this writing, all 30 for $1962. and set of only 20 photos for $750. Each photo is captioned on the grey card..
