Description:
Philadelphia: Printed by Lydia R. Bailey for Benjamin and Thomas Kite, 1812. Original Wrappers. Fair binding. 12mo. [48] pp. Stitched into self wrappers. Heavily worn with loss to the bottom of the cover title including, unfortunately, the imprint which bears Bailey's name. This same loss affects the note to the reader on the verso of this page; the second leaf containing an anatomical illustrations is quite ragged with a couple of large closed tears but all text is present; the balance of the almanac is in more stabile if fair condition with dog-eared corners, early tidelines, an occasional closed tear, and one leaf that has an 1/8" tear in the center of a leaf with minor loss of text. This is an early almanac printed by Bailey, who took over her husband Robert Bailey's print shop after his death in 1808 and ran in until she retired and closed the shop in 1861. Karen Nipps in her biographical sketch writes, "Bailey was the master printer of a shop that at its peak was one of the largest in the… Read More

Philadelphia: Printed by Lydia R. Bailey for Benjamin and Thomas Kite, 1815. Original Wrappers. Fair binding. 12mo. [36] pp. illus. Stitched into self wrappers; title vignette and anatomical illustration. Final leaf is missing the bottom third of the leaf; otherwise generally worn with many folded corners; ragged page edges; early tidelines; some insect spotting, but complete except for this final leaf. This is an early almanac printed by Bailey, who took over her husband Robert Bailey's print shop after his death in 1808 and ran in until she retired and closed the shop in 1861. Karen Nipps in her biographical sketch writes, "Bailey was the master printer of a shop that at its peak was one of the largest in the city, employing more than forty workers. . . . [S]he transformed her husband's floundering business into one of the busiest printing establishments in Philadelphia. Although previous generations of printers' widows had continued their husbands' careers, they had done so only long enough to… Read More

Description:
London: Trelawney Saunders, 1850. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Octavo. xii 164 pp., frontis, 2 plates. First edition. In publisher's blue, embossed cloth; a separately published folding map to accompany this volume is not present and is itself fairly uncommon, otherwise all plates are present. Binding is a trifle shelfworn and has a notable forward lean; corners and spine ends softened; very sensitive conservation work to some to some weak spots in the cloth; additionally, the a few preliminary leaves have been sympathetically reattached and the front hinge mended; all in all, some very discreet and professional work. Contents are largely clean but for some light foxing to the three engravings; a few leaves have been roughly or carelessly opened leaving some tears in the margin. Previous ownership stamp of 20th century American archaeologist Harry Evelyn Dorr Pollock on the front free endpaper; Edmonds & Remnants, London binder's ticket on the rear pastedown. Uncommon. Sabin 2771.

London: Golden Cockerel Press, 1954. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding. Quarto. [2], 158 pp., frontis, plates. Limited edition, number 205 of 260. As issued, in paper over boards, backed in buckram; 8 full page wood engravings and two in-text vignettes. Generally an attractive copy; spine a trifle sunned; tail of the spine bumped; bookseller's pencil notes to front free endpaper; bottom edges of many pages are just a bit toned, quite subtle; a beautiful copy. "First published in 1603, in Latin, this very early picaresque novel immediately became a European best-seller. Written by a Scotsman who was born and bred in France, it was reprinted in Latin twenty times with the first seventy years, and was also translated into French, Dutch, and German. It was never translated into English, although the original was widely read in England at the time. Our translation was thus the first to introduce Euphormio's bizarre and unpredictable adventures to the ordinary reader" Cock-A-Hoop 196.
