Description:
London: George Newnes, Limited, 1916. Second Edition. Hardcover. This is the 1916 edition of the first biography of Churchill in the quite scarce dust jacket. In 1905, MacCallum Scott wrote the first biography of Churchill. Churchill was only thirty-one and his future greatness was still both distant and uncertain. Nonetheless, the author predicted that Churchill would achieve the premiership. In 1916, during the First World War and soon after Churchill was forced from the Cabinet over the Dardanelles, the author published an updated version. At a time when Churchill's scapegoating was still fresh and his future uncertain, the author asserted that Churchill's plan was strategically sound, the failure being military and political. Interestingly, the penultimate chapter is entitled “The Downfall”. Here is this 1916 edition in the quite rare and striking original dust jacket, featuring a front face portrait of Churchill in his Admiralty uniform. The volume itself is near fine. The red cloth… Read More

Description:
Fordingbridge, Hampshire: Castle Hill Press, 2004. Limited, full-morocco issue of the third English edition. Full leather. This is the beautiful Castle Hill Press limited edition of parallel French and English texts of Lawrence's first published translation, Adrien Le Corbeau's novel The Forest Giant. Of a total edition of 352, only 40 were bound thus, in full red crushed morocco with blind-ruled borders on the upper board, enclosing central pine cone design in blind, spine lettered in gilt, blind-ruled turn-ins framing marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, and housed in a red cloth slipcase. This copy is hand numbered “40” in red ink on the limitation page. Condition is truly fine, with no reportable wear or flaws. Le Gigantesque was first published in Paris in 1922. Although the Academie Francaise awarded Le Gigantesque the Montyon prize, “the novel failed to bring the author the literary recognition he so much hoped for.” Even the English-language translation remained virtually unknown to modern… Read More

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1937. First U.S. edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a first printing of the first American edition. This example is in good plus condition. The orange cloth binding is tight and square with sharp corners. The spine is mildly and uniformly sunned with a tiny closed tear to the head and a faint vertical crease. The contents are crisp, clean, and bright with no spotting and no appreciable age toning. The orange topstain retains uniform, unfaded color. Even the untrimmed fore edges and bottom edges are immaculately bright. The sole previous ownership mark is contemporary - a location, “Rolla, B.C.” and the date “March 11th 1937” all inked in the same hand on the upper front free endpaper recto. Cards on the Table is a Poirot murder mystery, and features the first introduction of crime writer Ariadne Oliver, "Christie's literary alter ego and parody of herself". Description:
London: Collins, 1935. First British edition, twelfth printing. Hardcover. This is a British first edition, twelfth printing. Condition is very good. The binding is tight, clean, and unfaded, though with a modest forward lean and only light wear to extremities. The contents are crisp and clean, with no spotting and no discernible age toning apart from transfer browning to the endpapers from the pastedown glue. Even the text block edges are notably bright. The sole previous ownership mark is a contemporary name, British Columbia address, and date of “Nov. 2nd, 1936” inked on the front free endpaper recto. The Big Four, first published in the UK and the US in 1927, consists of a set of 12 loosely connected short stories. It followed the huge critical success of the previous year's The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. At the beginning of the story, Hercule Poirot is visited at his home by a man "coated from head to foot with dust and mud". The man initially can only repeat Poirot's address, and draws the… Read More

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1939. First U.S. edition. Hardcover. This is a jacketed first printing of the first American edition. This example is very good plus in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is tight, clean, and unfaded, with sharp corners. The spine shows only mild wear to the ends and faint vertical creasing. The contents are crisp, bright, and clean with no spotting and no discernible age toning. The text block edges, including the untrimmed fore edges, are likewise exceptionally clean. The blue-stained top edges are lightly faded. The sole previous ownership mark is a contemporary name, British Columbia address, and date of “Jan. 6th. 1940” inked on the front free endpaper recto. The scarce dust jacket is clean and bright, despite light wear to extremities, flap folds, and joints, tiny loss to the spine ends and flap fold corners, and a three-inch closed tear to the lower front joint. Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1992. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, inscribed and dated by the author. Ambrose inked his inscription in five lines on the recto of the page preceding the title page: For Greg | Best wishes | S E Ambrose | Appleton | 9/13/96. The only other previous ownership mark is a gift inscription inked in four lines on the front free endpaper recto: To Gregg | Happy Birthday 1992 | With love | Mother & Dad . We are fortunate to know the provenance of this copy, which we acquired from the original owners family, who purchased the book in 1992 and had it inscribed by Ambrose four years later. Condition is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The quarter purple cloth binding over tan paper-covered boards remains clean, bright, and tight. We note only tiny bumps to the upper corners, a hint of wrinkling to the spine ends, and a small, unobtrusive scratch to the lower left of the spine, corresponding to a small hole in the dust jacket.… Read More

London: Williams and Norgate Ltd., 1939. First edition, second printing. Hardcover. This is an exceptionally clean first edition, second printing. This second printing was published in May 1939, the same month as the first printing, and is identical with the sole exception of the print history on the copyright page. Condition is near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The jacket is clean, bright, and complete apart from a neatly price-clipped lower front flap. Trivial wear is confined to hinges and extremities. The jacket is fitted with a clear, removable, archival cover. The volume beneath it suits its jacket. The khaki cloth binding is tight and clean with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and no appreciable wear apart from a little wrinkling to the spine heel. Description:
London: Punch, 1925. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "THE INFANT HERCULES." appeared thus on p.463 of the 29 April 1925 issue of Punch. The artist is Bernard Partridge. Churchill was Chancellor of the Exchequer and had just submitted Britain's first budget after he had restored Britain to the Gold Standard. The artist plays on several themes. First is Churchill's oft repeated portrayal as an infant or cherub. Second is his temperamental inclination to tackle Herculean public policy challenges. In this image, Churchill as "Infant Hercules" and carrying his budget must wrestle the twin serpents of "TRADE DEPRESSION" and "WASTEFUL SPENDING", the invocation of Hercules an… Read More

This cartoon titled "'Supporters' Rampant” appeared thus on p.461 of the 29 December 1909 issue of Punch. The artist is Bernard Partridge. The cartoon is captioned "An Heraldic Inversion". The heraldic inversion is a reference to the fact that cabinet members such as Churchill and Lloyd George would normally be considered as the subordinates whose task was to promote the agenda set by the prime minister. In this case, the radical agenda was really being set by Churchill and Lloyd George, and Prime Minister Asquith was being cajoled into supporting their measures. Churchill, then-Chancellor of the Exchequer, continually wanted to "borrow" some of its assets. Churchill had spent nearly the entirety of the 1930s in the political wilderness, out of power, out of favor, and frequently at odds with both his own Conservative Party and prevailing public sentiment.
