Tokyo / Tübingen: Ronsosha / konkursbuch, for Claudia Gehrke, 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. As New. Ambrosius Mario. Signed by Author. One of the most disturbing, thoughtful, arresting and provocative works of photography (and narrative) as I've ever seen (and read). It is in stellar condition and is SIGNED by the author and artist at title page, inscribed, "For Cathy, with Great Pleasure! Mario A. Berlin-Tokyo 2001." Oblong format, pictorial hardcover of an inanimate female puppet (or is she?). Provoked by a story that is told in narrative in both English and Japanese at book's close, involving Ma Poupee Japonaise in the character of Sachiko Hara, and with Masahiko Shimada standing in as the woman-puppet's fictive father, it follows the animation / death / reanimation of a drowned 17-year-old girl, her grieving father, and her creation as a living doll of sorts in a department store, one that is reanimated in both the interlocutor's voice and through the… Read more

San Francisco: Samuel Carson & Co, 1888. Hardcover. Good. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, with lightly bruised and scuffed tips, neat and tidy paste-downs, and decorated endpapers; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. Published by Samuel Carson & Company, printed by C.T. Dillingham, San Francisco & New York, 1888. A second printing of the First Edition, having been "translated from the Portuguese" (yeah, right) and published in this edition the year prior, featuring full gilt-embossed light brown-colored cloth, with some bumping to and scuffing of spine head and foot. The gilt illustration is of a Portuguese conqueror seated on a rock, perhaps a loose head at his side, definitely, a California bear and sword at his side, too, with two Portuguese ships in the bay. 333 pp., and indexed fully. A fine frontis illustration in photogravure of who appears to be a Jesuit priest taking down Manuelo's "Narrative," as… Read more
