Fine, uniform original decorated cloth bindings. = Deals with the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi and is on many subjects a standard work (e.g. history of the cartography; geology and palaeontology, ethnography, etc., etc.). A set of the complete text. The separate atlas is not included. Apart from the pencilled marginalia an unusually fine, unmarked set.

Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. The second, smaller paper, has a fine plate with two hand-coloured views. It is a rare offprint from the Mémoires of the royal academy of science in Saint Petersburg, volume 4(10). Especially the first monograph, printed in Tiflis [Tblisi], is extremely rare. Many species are new, and several belong to the extant fauna, therefore this work is a must for students of Recent Indo-Pacific molluscs. René Abrard (1892-1973) was a French geologist and palaeontologist who was specialized in the study of the Paris basin, but this works shows that he was also working on fossil molluscs from other regions. London, R. Ackermann, [1821]. Folio (28.2 x 22.5 cm). Engraved frontispiece, engraved title; 126 engraved and aquatint plates, of which 31 originally coloured by hand. Later half calf over contemporary plain boards. Spine with five raised, gilt-bordered bands and gilt title. Olive endpapers; speckled edges. = An ultra-rare, varied and finely illustrated drawing book, containing visual instructions on how to draw people and objects, and how to deal with perspective. We found only one auction record, of an incomplete and damp-stained copy sold in 1981. The images include mythological scenes, human facial expressions, human anatomy, landscapes, cattle, shells, flowers and fruits, etc., showing different techniques. Plate 99 is in fact a transfer of a handwritten dedication by Rudolph Ackermann, to Alois Senefelder, "Inventor of the art of lithography". The work was engraved by Thomas Hodson and John Dougall, both who were active in the late 18th and early 19th century. The plates are… Read More

Juko Jushikei Hakki. Three parts in one volume. Kyoto (?), Enami Jinbee, Genroku 8 (= 1685). 4to size (27.0 x 19.0 cm). Xylographically printed on 69 double leaves folded in an accordion, or oriental, style, with 16 full-page woodcut plates. Original blue paper wrappers with xylographic text vignette on front. Contained in a modern blue cloth box made in Japanese style. = Very rare illustrated work on acupuncture. Bibliographically, little is known about this work. It was anonymously published, and our copy seems to be a second issue. Mestler describes a similar work that was issued in 1684; this copy was published in 1685. The book was written in classical Chinese (in Japanese typescript). The author claims that he bases his writings on several classic Chinese medical texts from the 14th and 15th century. The beautiful illustrations appear to be made in the style of the mid-14th-century Chinese classic “Shi si jing fa hui” (An Elucidation of the Fourteen Channels) by Hua Shou. The plates… Read More

It contains the descriptions, in English, of 517 species, many of which are new. Blind-stamped on both boards is the title addition Young naturalist's library. Both the engravings on the plates and those in the text are printed in reverse, thus with all the gastropods left-handed.
