New York: Oxford University Press, 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. New York: Oxford University Press, 1953. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING with all first issue points. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Very Good in Very Good Dust Jacket. Tight binding; clean pages and covers; SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT ENDPAPER; moderate wear to edges of covers; dust jacket is fairly clean with moderate wear; price not clipped ($7.50). Abrams shows that until the Romantics, literature was typically understood as a mirror reflecting the real world in some kind of mimesis; whereas for the Romantics, writing was more like a lamp: the light of the writer's inner soul spilled out to illuminate the world. In 1998, Modern Library ranked The Mirror and the Lamp one of the 100 greatest English-language nonfiction books of the 20th century. Very scarce signed. London: John Murray, 1876. First Edition. Hardcover. Poor. London: John Murray, 1876. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated. 252 pages. Poor or better. Hinges cracked; several pages are loose; one plate very chipped and lacking a bit along edges; exlibrary with usual marks; pages have small tears, soil and foxing; several pages have tape repairs; covers very worn; rebacked at some point; not a nice copy.  "The author's hunting party traveled through the Mareb River region of Abyssinia and encountered lion, gazelle, hartebeest and elephant. While there are various incidences of sport, much of the narrative is of travel in the area. As with many sportsmen in the tropics, Mayo fell ill to fever and dysentery, but managed to recover: 'I am much better this morning, having taken three doses of opium which acted instantaneously, thank goodness!' Undoubtedly!" (Czech, p. 188).  .
