Description:
Bronx, New York, 1938. 10 ¾" x 7 7/8". Blue cloth. Pp. 100. Very good: boards unevenly faded with spots of soiling and some loss at corners and spine tips; shaken but holding firmly. The senior high school yearbook of the Bronx's Walton High School, an all girls school at the time. This copy features Bella Abzug (Savitzky) in her senior year with a prophetic inscription, "Despite Schein/we'll all/get to the top/together. " Miss E. Hedwig Schein was chair of the music department. The printed quote next to her portrait reads, "it is not in mortals to command success, but she will do more-she will deserve it. " Abzug's image also appears at least three other times including group photos of senior officers (she was class president) and who's who (she was voted most popular). Description:
Nashville, Tennessee: Geo. H. Anderson, 1923. Good. Three black and white photographs, each measuring 8" x 10" on card mounts measuring 11 ½" x 13 ½". Photos very good with a few minor surface abrasions and one small stain in the background of one photo; mounts good with moderate wear, chipping and a bit wavy. This is a group of three spectacular photographs by a prolific Black photographer in Nashville which showcases Meharry Medical College's [MMC] pharmacy school graduating class of 1923, as well as the members of its Phi Beta Sigma chapter. MMC was the first medical school for African Americans in the South when it was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College. The school was chartered separately in 1915 and in the early 21st century became the largest HBCU devoted solely to educating scientists and healthcare professionals. The 1923 graduating class was Meharry's largest to that point with 198 degrees conferred and 20 of them going to women. While we cannot… Read More

Description:
South Dakota, 1893. Very good. 6¾" x 11¼". Steel post binder with contemporary semiwraparound enclosure made of thick wood boards, held together with a calf backstrip. 25 thick card leaves, most of which are interleaved with typing paper with a total of 50 albumen photographs glued down, one per page. Photos measure 4 3/8" x 7 5/8" and 39 are captioned in the negative, though a few are hard to read. Album very good: moderate wear, leaves a bit wavy; photos generally near fine or better. This is an album of large photographs depicting the Sioux at the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation (RSIR, also known as the "Rosebud Agency") in South Dakota. The album also features some of the early work of an important photographer who dedicated his life to documenting the Rosebud Sioux, John Alvin Anderson. According to an article by Claes H. Jacobson, Anderson emigrated from Sweden at the age of one in 1870, and his family eventually settled, in 1883, in Sparks, Nebraska, close to the border of South Dakota… Read More

Description:
New York: N.P., 1975. Very good. 8½" x 5½". Stapled self-wrappers. Publication sequence: Issue #s 13, 14, [15], [16] (December 1974-March 1975). 20-24 pages per issue. Very good: moderate wear, occasional minor spots of soiling. This is a run of several early issues of SMads, a BDSM personal ads service. According to more than one leather history website as well as the Leather Archives & Museum, SMads was edited by Marshall Loeb and was in publication from 1972 to 1987. According to an article in Drummer 41 (November 1980), SMads was, in its time, "the most upfront collection of sexuality available. Every specific sexual desire, from basic S&M to scat and water sports, heavy bondage to shaving and piercing appeared in its pages." Each issue is filled with exceptionally explicit personal ads, but there is much more here for the careful researcher, e.g. an ad for "an S/M ranch in Texas with barn, corral, cattle, gear and equipment has openings for slaves." There are also ads for more than one… Read More
