A response to the impending Beer Act of 1830, from a "Country Brewer". The commercial policy called the Beer Act would open brewing and cider making up to all householders who paid a modest fee, and the existing brewers, all licensed by local magistrates, were pushing back. The argument made within claims that quality will decline, adulteration will proliferate, and the economic impact will be negative. To some extent the Country Brewer must have been correct. Only two weeks after the passage of the act, Sir Sydney Smith uttered his famous line, "The Sovereign people are in a beastly state. Everybody is drunk. Those who are not singing are sprawling." It is "the first book to explain how and why the Portuguese were not able to modernize their trade system when faced with crisis conditions" (from the jacket copy). Sinclair, Lith., Phila." Date estimate from date of companion publication, and firm name of the lithographer (starting 1853, Sinclair operated as "Thomas Sinclair & Co.". Stated second edition (see page 5). An etiquette manual, issued amidst a flood of such publications. The manual covers the standard subjects: presentations, salutations, letter writing, visits, dinners, dances, servants, travelling (sic), and more. Small household cookery book, claiming to be compiled "entirely from private resources and personal experience. Includes a significant section of pickles and vinegars, alongside the fish, meat, puddings and wine recipes. Some soiling to pages, and modern owner's inscription and stamp, to endpapers. In gilt stamped and decorated red cloth boards, which appear to have been discretely rebacked. Still not unattractive. [Not in Attar...].

New York: Published by J.K. Wellman, 16 Spruce Street, 1845. Duodecimo ( x cm.), ix, 107 pages. Third edition. Originally published New York 1844 by J. Mowatt. The author's preface (following that of Dr. Lee), states her intention to address "the ignorance of nurses and attendants, in relation to the general management of the sick room and the preparation of suitable articles of drink and nourishment..." The book begins with general descriptions of Diet During Diseases, and then contains dozens of recipes for specific dishes and drinks for the sick and convalescent. Medical recipes, and antidotes follow, and the book ends with general rules for health, including entries for Reading Aloud (healthy), Wind Instruments (damaging to the lungs), and Friction (generally to be avoided). Internally foxed. The front panel of the original salmon-colored, printed wrapper is present. The rear panel is lacking altogether and the spine is partially perished. Driver reports the first edition as published 1893, with the "New and popular edition" issued 1899. The publisher's address indicated on the title page, "28 & 29 Southampton Street", makes it likely that this was issued 1897. The book is evenly split between the descriptions of special needs for feeding for a variety of maladies, and recipes for appropriate dishes. Internally near very good, in gold and black-printed olive colored cloth. [OCLC records seven undated copies; Driver 29].

Boston: A.P. Ordway & Co, 1889. Small octavo, 32 pages. FIRST EDITION. The second cookbook issued by Ordway Co. to promote use of Sulphur Bitters. And promote it does! Each short recipe comes with a final line of text proclaiming another fantastic quality of the tonic, perhaps the only honest one being "What Sulphur Bitters have done for others, they will do for you." The recipes are interspersed with glowing testimonials. Very tiny edge wear to blue-printed wrappers, otherwise fine.

Very good in burgundy cloth with black and gilt-stamped decoration. With the bookplate of the Sontheimer Foundation. Scarce. [Bitting page 516; Cagle 42 (later issue); Lowenstein 768-770].

A trade catalogue of topiary shrubs issued by the Royal Dutch Nursery "Terra Nova." The catalog includes photographs of numerous ornamental shrubs, each identified by number. The topiary forms include geometric shapes, animals, urns, chairs, boats, etc. The stock numbers are irregular. Additional illustrations depict the nursery grounds, including fields filled with orderly rows of topiary in a variety of forms. Map on rear wrapper panel. Internally clean and sound. In cream-color wrappers, titled in brown, and with two paste-downs, one a photographic depiction of the the nursery, and the other a small color-printed "Royal Dutch" crest. See Cagle's note regarding the pagination of the final leaves and of the preface (this issue fits none of the three variations described). A rather detailed treatise, with recipes, on the subject of cooking economically for nutritional value. As a result of publication of this book and this prize, the author was invited by Ellen Swallow Richards (chemist, pioneering feminist, and the first woman student and later instructor at MIT), to create the New England Kitchen of Boston. The New England Kitchen's goal was to educate new immigrants and the poor about food and nutrition. The Kitchen was a failed experiment, but Abel wrote about it in 1893, with the publication of "The Story of the New England Kitchen". Henniker, N.H.[?], 1906. Tall octavo (42 x 17 cm.), [approx. 150] pages. An account book of an unidentified New Hampshire butcher working in the 1840's. The individual accounts identify customers at the top of each page, with names including John Slade, Joseph S. Newhall, Hammon Hall, William Oliver, Nathaniel Mansfield, G.H. Hardy, and others. Items sold include Lamb, Beef, Veal, Mutton, Shin Beef, Shank Beef, Beefs, Toung (sic), Chickings (sic), Pork, Sausages, Suett, Soup Bones, and on a separate page Calf Skins, Tripes and Tallow. The free front end paper bears the inscription, "James Wallace Henniker, N.H.", though the hand matches the writing of the keeper of a second account (1901-1906). The center of the book bears a section with a Household Inventory and Accounts (8 pages) of Lizzie P. Gove, conducted by Ella Brock Brooks, both of Manchester, N.H., and likely in Brooks' hand. In multiple hands. Eight manuscript account books demonstrate the groceries purchased and relationship between the Shaw's and seven Belknap County, New Hampshire grocers: P. Berrley (1888), C.H. Watson (1895), A. Eugune Hill (1899), John Parker Smith Co. (1900, 1905), C.A. George (1903), and E.L. Cram (undated). The account books record items purchased, quantity, the date of purchase, and cost and also indicate when debts were paid. Purchased items include tea, butter, lard, oranges, vinegar, onions, apples, oats, oil, beef, tripe, veal, Bon Ami, pumpkin, cheese, and much more. Dayton O. Shaw, born in Belknap County, New Hampshire circa 1859, served as a State Road Patrolman who was appointed to Deputy Fire Warden in 1907. He and his wife lived in New Hampton, New Hampshire. Maestricht [Maastricht]: de l'imprimerie de Th. Nypels, 1807. Broadside (16.25 x 13.5 inches). FIRST EDITION. In order to combat the greed, disorder, and swindles of the fishmongers of Maastricht, the mayor and prefect (who both sign their names in type and date them 1807 at the foot of the proclamation) here publish the ten articles of regulation of the Maastricht fish market - down to the sorting and display of particular kinds of fish, the regulation of public auction, or when vendors might circulate to sell their fish outside the marketplace.
