Description:
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1871. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. First printing of the first American edition, sixmo size, 384 pp. Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888), penned this sequel two years after "Little Women" which was popular immediately upon publication. Alcott, an abolitionist and feminist, grew up surrounded by many of the 19th-century literary lights of New England, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Spurred on to writing both by internal passion as well as financial need, she was a prolific author, and according to G.K. Chesteron "anticipated realism by twenty or thirty years" (n.b., quote from Wiki). "Little Men" is the second of the three books considered to be the "Little Women Trilogy" and follows six months in the life of Plumfield, a school run by Jo (Mrs. Josephine Bhaer (neé March)) and her German Professor husband, and includes a diverse group of students which enables Alcott to speculate on the… Read more

Description:
New York: Crown Publishers, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +/fair. First printing, octavo size, 320 pp. The well-known muscial "Fiddler on the Roof" opened on Broadway in 1964, and "was the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances" - it held the record for the longest-running musical on Broadway for almost ten years, until surpassed by "Grease", winning nine Tony Awards. The reasons for its success were many, we surmise in part due to the timeless themes that touch everyone's heart: a loving father worrying about his children; trying to come to grips with their independence as they reach adulthood; and the dreams of immigrants everywhere who long for a better life. These are the stories upon which the play is based, the first printing, with the price of $3.00 on the dust jacket, no additional printings listed (which denotes a Crown first printing per Zempel), and no mention of the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" on the dust jacket. The author, Solomon Naumovich… Read more

Description:
St. Louis: Published by the Author, 1892. 5th Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Duodecimo size, 458 pp. "The Life of a Book Agent" is the autobiography of the bookseller Annie Nelles, telling of her escapades and travels as she tries to make a living peddling books; although there is some dispute as to which parts are fiction and which are true, nonetheless the book provides an in-depth look at a determined woman who searches for success in a business that, at the time, was largely dominated by men. At times melodramatic, Nelles' autobiography is filled with poignant moments as she struggles to make a living, to rise out of poverty, and to be independent. This volume is the fifth edition of Nelles' book, and, unlike the earlier editions, is presented as though a friend of the author were telling the story of her life. This volume is seemingly scarce in the trade, with this copy is in better condition than usually found.___DESCRIPTION: Full green cloth, black decorative borders and ornaments with… Read more
