Description:
Albany, 1709. [1]p. Folio. Old fold lines, light soiling and wear. Good. Manuscript document detailing the expenses associated with the repair of the old blockhouse in Albany, signed by Albany official Johannes Abeel. Abeel (1667-1711) was an Albany native and merchant who held various local offices, including mayor of Albany from 1709 to 1710 - likely the capacity in which he signed off on the present account. Work began and was mostly performed in mid-November, finally finishing in late January. Of the fifteen line items listed, eight are for "1 quart rum" for the laborers (each costing one shilling and three pence), four are for nails, and the other three list the labor of two individual men - Jacob and Cornelius Boogert. Total cost was £9/3/3.

Description:
[Washington, 1808].. 19pp. Printed self-wrappers, stitched. Lower quarter of most leaves lightly soiled and dampstained, else very good. Rare Senate draft printing of the 1807 Embargo Act and the subsequent acts of 1808 relating to it. After the passage of the first embargo act in December 1807, it was quickly discovered that the requirement for American trading vessels to post bonds guaranteeing they would not sail to foreign ports did not technically extend to coasting vessels and fishing and whaling boats. The act passed in January 1808 closed the loophole and further tightened restrictions for all American ship owners. By March, major protests and open flouting of the embargo laws along the New England coast and the Canadian border led to a third embargo act, completely prohibiting the export of any goods, by land or sea, and subjecting offenders to a $10,000 fine. Continued violations led to the "Enforcement Act" in April, which allowed authorities, among other powers, to seize cargoes without… Read More

Description:
Portsmouth, N.H.: Printed at the N.H. Gazette office, 1808. 12pp. Dbd. First leaf detached. Soft horizontal fold. Toned and foxed. A good copy. A New Englander's defense of the Embargo Act against Daniel Webster's recent pamphlet, CONSIDERATIONS ON THE EMBARGO LAWS (1808), which is considered to be Webster's first publication. The anonymous author of the present pamphlet recounts the military and economic events leading up to the passage of the embargo laws and calls for fellow northerners - and specifically residents of New Hampshire - to evince their patriotism and unite with the southern states in support of the Embargo and U.S. neutrality. New England, whose economy was largely dependent upon international shipping and trade, suffered disproportionately after Congress passed the Embargo Act in 1807 and produced a large share of its most vociferous opponents. By the end of 1808, the Act had lost all but its most ardent supporters and was replaced with the weak Nonintercourse Act in January 1809.… Read More

Washington: Printed by R.C. Weightma, 1808. 123pp. Gathered signatures, stitched. Contemporary numerical inscription, "No 1," in upper margin of title-leaf. Foxing in outer leaves, creasing in title-leaf, else near fine, untrimmed. Senate printing of a large compendium of British, French, and Spanish laws and decrees affecting American trade during those countries' wars from 1791 to 1808. Submitted with a message by Thomas Jefferson on Dec. 23, 1808, this collection of documents was clearly intended to demonstrate the need for a continuation of the Embargo Act of 1807, which by the end of 1808 had lost support from all but its most ardent defenders. Jefferson had made it a point of honor that the Embargo would survive his Presidency, but Congress finally replaced it with the Nonintercourse Act on March 1, three days before Jefferson would end his second term. An important resource, including substantial diplomatic and naval correspondence in addition to the orders and decrees. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 16485.… Read More

Second edition, published the same year as the first by the prolific Whig printer, John Almon. An account of Britain's taxation of its North American colonies, specifically the Stamp Act. The author blames the British administration for aggravating the situation between the colonies and Great Britain by delaying a call for action on the part of Parliament. Adams cites Oliver Dickerson's THE NAVIGATION ACTS AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (1951) as ascribing this work to James Scott. HOWES S434, "aa." SABIN 80637. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 66-53b. ESTC N22758.

Minor foxing, stab holes in gutter from prior binding. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth folder. Argues the questions of England's right to tax its dependencies, and addresses the issue of the Stamp Act with reference to America. The anonymous author's opinion on the matter is fairly measured, admitting that the American colonies should contribute to their defense, but asserting that the Stamp Act was the improper way to go about it - he would rather see Americans contribute directly to their own military defense and thereby reduce the costs incurred on Britain, rather than indirectly by feeding the mother country's coffers. Paris [i.e. London: J.W. Imprimeur [i.e. J. Almon], 1766. 24pp. Modern paper boards, printed paper label. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Very minor soiling and foxing. Very good. In a green half morocco and cloth case. Prints the arguments made by those members of the House of Lords who opposed a repeal of the Stamp Act. The main reason seems to be not that the tax is just, but that repealing it would set a bad precedent. This pamphlet also lists the Lords who spoke and voted against the repeal. Their votes would prove to be in vain, however, as the bill passed both houses and received royal assent on March 18, one week after the Lords' vote. Adams notes an eight-page list of the minority in the House of Commons who voted against the bill to repeal the Stamp Act bound at the end, but it seems that format is the exception, and that most copies simply contain the TWO PROTESTS. [Washington], December 26, 1808.. 11pp. Docketed on verso of final leaf. Folio. Dbd., with later paper strip along the spine. Light soiling and wear, horizontal folds. Very good. Untrimmed. A slip-bill printing of the Non-Intercourse Act of 1809, presented to the House of Representatives in December 1808, featuring some significant differences from the final bill. The Non-Intercourse Act of 1809 took a step back from Jefferson's fiercely unpopular Embargo Act of 1807. The Embargo Act came hot on the heels of the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair, and sought to punish Britain and France by shuttering all American trade with foreign nations, both incoming and outgoing. The draconian measure was initially met with approval, but quickly became controversial as the economic effects took their toll. The Massachusetts Legislature recalled Senator John Quincy Adams because he supported the Embargo, and Governor James Sullivan regularly signed bills allowing certain goods to be shipped into Massachusetts ports, in… Read More

[New York: Printed by John Holt, May 20, 1774].. Broadsheet, approximately 12 1/2 x 8 inches, printed in two columns. Lightly silked. Inscribed in later ink in lower margin of p.[2]: "Printed by John Holt." Very good. In a half brown morocco and cloth folding case, spine gilt. A protest of the Boston Port Act, passed by Parliament on March 31, 1774. The act, designed to punish Boston for the Tea Party, ordered the port of Boston closed until the inhabitants reimbursed the East India Company and King's treasury for the tea destroyed and customs duty lost on December 16, 1773. "Because Boston alone was punished, Lord North believed the colonies would not 'take fire.' It was a costly mistake: the cry was raised in America that the Port Act was merely a prelude to a 'Massacre of American Liberty'; the colonies rallied to Boston's aid; and the Continental Congress was called to concert opposition to the mother country" - DAH.
