Description:
Washington D.C: N.p., [ca, 1931]. A lovely album with 173 mounted original photographs of hundreds of scenes in historic Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. The photographs all measure 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches and are mounted on rectos only with four to each page. All are captioned (some have general captions such as "Culverts") and many likely contains locales no longer extant in the park. Tissue guards throughout. The original album is a faux brown leather (fabricoid) deeply embossed on the front cover and with gilt designs, small paper title label on upper left front board. Some shelf rubbing but a great album. After strenuous searching we could find no record of a professional photographer with the name of G. A. Lyon nonetheless he was a very talented amateur with an obvious love for Rock Creek Park. The tonality is uniformly fine and none have fallen out in the preceding decades. Most are nature and bridge/ building images but a few show peole relaxing in the park. The last wo pages are of the… Read More

Description:
[Philadelphia]: National Drug Company, [ca. 1935]. First edition of these exceeding surrealistic medical drawings by African-American artist Leon Brown. The portfolio consists of six quite large (9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches) photolithographs by the virtually unknown African-American artist Leon Brown. At the beginning is an introduction written by a fellow employees _-"These remarkable pencil sketches are the work of a young colored artist in charge maintenance and purchasing at the research laboratories of the National Drug Company." Each of these delightfully bizarre illustrations is accompanied by a text leaf by Brown explaining what he was trying to achieve with the print. Thankfully, they are equally as bizarre and fascinating. Those six sheets are headed The Surgeon, Eye Ear Nose and Throat Specialist, The Pediatrician, The Obstetrician, The Psychiatrist & the The "GP." In the original manila envelope. In the Psychiatrist text lead we read "The escapist is always tying to bury his face in the rock he… Read More

Description:
[Los Angeles]: N.p., 1926. Six leaves (8 1/2 x 11 inches), typed on rectos only. Staple three hole notpaper. Opening leaf with some offsetting and an old crease in the middle, else very good. This article was meant for publication in the May 1926 issue of Haldeman-Julius Month. We cannot determine if it was actually published or not but it is a fine article in the inimitable Adamic style. Adamic, a highly acclaimed author, journalist, and translator, often used his writing to highlight and advocate places of diversity in the United States, California being a prime subject. Adamic was especially fond of poking fun at all the MidWesterners who moved to Southern California for the easy life. The gist of the article can be read in the secong paragraph - "Of all the smaller cities in the country. of which I have seen a good many, Long Beach, is to me one of the most interesting, just as Los Angeles, which is but an exaggerated Long Beach, is, among the larger ones. Here is Gopher Prairie and Zenith… Read More

Description:
New York: William B. Clayton, 1913. Original program and flyer for a performance of February 19, 1913. Octavo. [8] pp. Original stapled self wrappers. Very faint crease to program. The flyer is smaller (5 1/2 x 7 inches) and is a 4-page bifolio with a cover photograph of Adeline Genee in her dance outfit. A nice little package. Adeline Genee was born in Denmark in 1878 (nee Anina Kirstina Margaret Petra Jensen) and by 1895 the principal dancer of the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen. Subsequently, in 1896, she danced with the Berlin Royal Opera Ballet and the Munich Opera Ballet. By 1897 Adeline had moved to England where she performed at the Empire Theatre for years solidifying her reputation. In November 1907, Genee sailed to the USA to perform in The Soul Kiss at the New York Theatre. The producer, Florenz Ziegfeld, described her on the posters as "The World's Greatest Dancer." On 3 December 1912 she made her debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera, with a program of divertissements which… Read More

London, et. al]: V. p, 1910. A remarkable collection of ca. 1910 British ads. Very skillfully cut and laid down. Almost alll of them pertain to personal hygiene (soaps. perfumes, cigarettes, hair products, etc,). Lots of the ads are very patriotic and drum up Nationalism. There are 158 ads and about 1/2 of them are full page. No tears or stains and none have fallen out.The album itself seems a bit newer but is still very attractive. Black leaves in a rectangular string bound leather album.

Description:
Chicago: Grant Advertising Inc, 1940. Original sage green paper portfolio (18 x 14 inches) with Grant Advertising, Inc. and slogan imprinted on front. This is a presentation, or pitch, by the advertising company to the Cudhy Packing Company for possible print ads for Delrich Margarine. Tipped-in to the folder are two hand-colored illustrations of margarine; one with rolls the other with corn. The drawings are very finely executed. Attached with a paperclip is the text that is proposed for the illustrations (2 pages, both on Grant Advertising letterhead). A fine look at the heyday of American Advertising. "Founded in 1935 in Chicago by Will C. Grant, Grant Advertising quickly grew into a worldwide network, opening its 25th overseas office, in Bangkok, just 21 years later. By 1959, Grant had 42 offices worldwide, further expanding what it claimed in 1952 to be the largest network of wholly owned advertising agency offices. The agency got off to a fast start, signing Mars Inc. as one of its first… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1907-1912. This officer was on the rise apparently as he was constantly moved from camp to camp. The album contains 214 original silver gelatin photographs. When he started the officer was based in India and up until photograph 154 all of the pictures are of sights in India, Ceylon, Mauritius, and Rangoon. Thankfully very few of these are family portraits as the officer seemed to delight in the local people and terrain. He is next situated in Pretoria at King's Hill, Harrismith. He seemed to have a relaxing time there mainly lounging around the army camp (and a very nice one at that) Robert's Heights. It was founded around 1905 by the British Army, and called Robert's Heights after Field Marshal Lord Roberts. There are numerous captains and generals named in the album but we could not discern the photographer's name but we do know he was a avid golfer. While in Ceylon he took photographs of many of the greens at that course. He did this again in South Africa. There are also numerous… Read More

N.p.: N.p., [ca. 1935-36]. Large (13 x 10 1/2 inches) album bearing 188 original photographs of place and people in Africa in the 1930s. The album is divided into two section. The first section has 56 original photographs measuring 6 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches. The second part has 132 photographs measuring 3 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches. Virtually all have captions in white. This count does not reflect the missing photographs (i.e. captions without photographs); two in the front part and 1 in the back part. Contemporary album of mottled brown boards. Custom slipcase with printed paper cover label. The photographer who undertook this journey covered vast distances and the original photographs are just as disparate. Locales as disparate as Lome (Togo), Northern Ghana, Mali, Algeria, Nigeria, Dakar and Dahomey. Most show activities and people. Two show the Bidon 5 Weather Station in Algeria (surely just put up).
