Description:
8vo, pamphlet, later brown cloth with gilt title on spine, folding map, 24 lithograph plates, 32 pp. Some wear to cloth, bookplate on front pastedown, lacks wrappers, foxing to plates and map, darkening to text block, some creasing to map, which makes it hard to open (but in very nice shape); otherwise very good. This work appears to include the first mapping of New Mexico of the newly acquired territory. The pamphlet also contains 24 lithograph plates attributed to Abert, which show scenes of Native Americans and locations in New Mexico, including Santa Fe, San Felipe and the Pueblos. Abert (1820-1897) was a soldier, naturalist, and artist who served in the Civil War. The text describes Abert's trip from Fort Leavenworth over the Santa Fe Trail. Abert's map appears to have been the most detailed of the New Mexico Territory up to that point. Graff 5. Howes A11. Sabin 57. Wagner-Camp 143.Streeter 168.

Description:
Folio (13x8), cloth with leather tips, 372 pp., plus a few letters and bills, and a number of sheets and notes with notations left in the ledger, some blank sheets. Binding shows a bit of wear, and some soiling, normal aging and browning; very good overall. Contents of this ledger suggest that J.S. Phillips was a merchant, and perhaps operated a general store. There are probably a couple thousand journal entries recording sales and balances. He kept accounts for his customers, and recorded their purchases. The contents include a few bills to him from supplies, a couple still in their original envelopes. Phillips and his son also appears to have been revenue collectors for the local school district, which is indicated in a note left in the ledger. Another document left in the ledger, suggests that one Jarvis S. Phillips, a relative, was a local justice of the peace.

Folio (16 1/4" x 6 3/4") paper wrappers, owner's name on top cover, 24 pp. Wrappers with some wear, some minor extremity chips, tears and corner folds, a little staining, normal aging and browning; otherwise very good. This appears to be an account book for a general store owned by Francis B. Gardner. The location appears to be in New York, but sometimes the writing looks like New Port. However, the writing is generally very legible, with every page filled with text of transactions. A very broad range of products are sold, including many articles of clothing, such as silk hats, vests, boots, and even silver watches. Furniture, linens, and other household items are listed, along with sugar, beef, fruits and vegetables.

Folio, contemporary reverse leather, MCMCA etched or printed on front panel, 431 pp. Binding shows some wear and scuffing, especially at the edges and spine, a couple of tears at the spine, a small piece missing at the bottom of spine, internally reinforced hinges; internally in excellent condition. A great record of a cigar manufacturer and distributor probably located in New England. The name of the firm appears to be "M.C.M.C.A." or"M.C.M." This was a large scale operation involved not only in making its own cigars (a variety of "MCM" brands), but also in distributing a great many brands for other makers, including Little Sweet Hearts, Smuggler, Concordia, Pantilla, Big Bonanza, and Henry Clay. The firm also purchased and sold tobacco leaf. The account includes regular entries for six individual cigar makers, a foreman, and an agent, with their wages and commissions, and an occasional record of shares of company stock sold to them. This is a fine voluminous account book highlighting an interesting… Read More

8vo, red leather stamped in gilt, 228 pp. (40 pages are used, the rest are blank), plus 3 manuscript documents laid in. Joints tender, extremity rubbing, a few chips to top and bottom of spine;very good. Incredible ledger, which if it is to be believed, records land sales that border on the criminally absurd. Entire states and territories are sold for small amounts of cash. Alfred Allen Eylar, born in Ohio in 1820, now of Pontiac, Illinois, has partnered with Eli Keith (indicated by an agreement, laid in) to set out for the wide west, selling large tracts of land to what must have been very gullible people. A brief itinerary of the journey is laid in, with expenses, and further expenses are detailed in the rear of the ledger. The main part of the of this rledger records 23 land transactions, selling off towns, counties, and even entire states and territories. Description:
Oblong narrow folio account book, leather spine & boards, about half the leaves contain text. Some edgewear, top hinge a little tender, but firm, normal aging and browning; very nice condition. Manuscript farm log and account book for Michael H. Kitzmiller. The ledger indicates he moved on to the farm in April 1848, but the first entry is on September 1, 1847. Thanks to a pretty legible hand it's easy to track farm prices during the duration of this log. In 1847, corn 62 1/2 per bushel, wheat $1.25 and rye $.75. Kitzmiller apears to have had a working relationship with William Pannebaker for a number of years. Pannebaker's business dealings with Kitzmiller covered the period from September 29, 1849 to March 29, 1861. He also worked with David Boyer between April 27, 1848 to October 18, 1851. The last entry is dated December 6, 1878, which was more than ten years after the previous entry.

Large folio sheet (13x16), folded, 1 pp. Two small holes in the folds, small chip, on left side of sheet, normal aging, an obsure word or two; otherwise in really nice condition. This manuscript document is to settle the account between Samuel Williams, captain of the ship, and John Dodge, who may have been a ship owner, or may have advanced the funds for the voyage. Entries in the ledger cover September to December 1805. Funds for supplies, like sugar, coffee, cloth, gin and rum are included in the entries. Also, the cost of burying a sailer ($3.00) are mentioned. Cargo is mentioned, but it's not totally clear, however, importation of fabrics is a possibility. Proceeds of the voyage were $28, 310.87.

Description:
Pamphlet dbd, 131 pp. Minor soiling on title page, and lower left corner missing small piece, not affecting text. Also, upper right corner with a slight chip. Otherwise very nice copy. This pamphlet actually includes a series of speeches on the Annexation of Texas that took place between June 16th and July 7th 1838. Additionally, the preface of this work provides some interesting background on the political dynamics of this issue. For many, this was a delicate subject at the time, which was complicated by the imprisonment of the Mexican President by the Texans, and a state of war between Texas and Mexico. At least early on, the US policy on annexing Texas was to be pursued through indirect means. Recognizing Texas as an independent state was part of this approach.

Small 8vo, blind stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, 214 pp. Binding leaning a bit, some wear to binding, rubbing to extremities, bookplate on front pastedown, some aging and browning; otherwise very good. This copy is from the library of Jack London, and has his bookplate on the front pastedown. The Adams (1808-1878) was born in Salem and was opposed to slavery, but felt some of the abolitionists were exaggerating what was happening in the south. However, some of his comments would suggest that not everything was being exaggerated. In is chapter on Slave auctions, he describes how he felt when a one year old child was being sold, and taken from its parents. He also shares his thoughts on the "peaceful" dissolution of the Union because of slavery, which he did not think was possible. A rather scarce title.

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, uncut and unbound, 9 pp. Paper with slightly uneven middle fold, some minor folds and chips at edges, slight foxing, creasing, and staining; otherwise very good. This pamphlet presents the views of the Georgia Legislature concerning the use of funds to support the objectives of the American Colonization Society. The American Colonization Society was founded in 1817 with the goal of sending free African Americans back to Africa. The organization even established a colony for that purpose in 1822. However, not all parties supported this objective, and it seems like the Georgia Legislature didn't like the idea of Federal money being used to support the objectives of the African Colonization Society.

Original illustrated wrappers, tall 8vo (7 1/4 x 9 3/4), includes 12 full page illustrations in addition to wrapper illustrations. Notes and musical score on inside covers. Wrappers are chipped, and there are a cople of pieces missing from the top of the back cover, but don't appear to be affecting text. Spine is split but holding, thanks to tape spine; some minor soiling. The song 'Ten Little Niggers' emerged from the minstrel shows in the South shortly after the Civil War.These shows became increasingly racist as time went on. They were known as Jim Crow shows and then became coon shows. While 'Ten Little Niggers' would appear in Children's nursery rhyme books, there real purpose was to present blacks in demeaning ways. Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, 173, [1] pp. Removed, some aging, foxing throughout, heavy in some places, slight soiling; otherwise in good to very good condition. The American Colonization Society was formed in 1816 by John Randolph, Henry Clay and Richard Lee. Daniel Webster, Henry Rutgers, and Francis Scott Key are listed as officials of this group in the pamphlet. This movement was part of a back to Africa process that would help ensure greater freedom for free African Americans. Around 1821, the American Colonization Society helped establish a colony in Liberia for that purpose. While some critics felt there were racist motives behind this movement, many blacks felt that having a separate place to live was the only way to avoid the discrimination they faced. A hundred years later, Marcus Gravey would make the same case, and start another back to Africa movement. Slaverynorth website. Denison website.
