Fred Allen's radio show, a 1940s precursor to television shows commenting on the week's news, was one of the most popular of the time. This book is an autobiographical tale from Allen's early days in radio to national fame with Allen's Alley, the nucleus of his show. The copy is lacking a dust cover, but otherwise in almost perfect shape aside from almost unnoticeable staining on the front cover. The four drawings by Al Hirshfield are a treasure themselves.

Although quite foxed throughout, much of the gold on the cover is still readable. No signs of problems with the binding. For 1849, this is in pretty good shape. The front [blank] endpaper is lost, but otherwise completely intact

PReceeded in 1847 by A Brief Compend of American Algriculture. Ex school library accoring to handwritten note on front endpage. Blind-stamped cover with somewhat faded gilt lettering and vingnette on spine. Pages are all foxed but clearly readable. There has been some folding of the edg of pages, especially near the front and the binding is slightly loose at the front, although all pages still attached. Some damage to frontispiece.

Signed on the title page by the author, the book may be self-published. Although ex-library, the only evidence is the stamp of the senior-living-center library on the endpapers and title page and a slight shadow on the front cover where a label with the catalog number once existed.

This charming book details the walls that European settlers added to the landscape when they first removed the stones from New England's (and New York State's) rocky soils to build low walls around their fields and pastures, many of which are still standing today, as well as the fancier stone walls erected by the wealthy in later years. Lovely illustrations as well.
