This Is A Photograph Of A World War I Observation Balloon by Ephemera [Photograph][Balloon School, Arcadia, Ca] [Military Observation Balloon]

Arcadia, CA: No Publisher Listed.. Very Good+. 1918. Other. B&W Illustrations; This is a smallish photography (approx. 5.5" x 3.5" in size) in Very Good+ condition. The photo is of a World War I Observation Balloon. The description on the back reads: "An 'Air Elephant' going up, at an American Balloon school, with a cadet in the basket, Arcadia, California". The balloon appears to be a Caquot Type R Observation Balloon. "Tethered balloons allowed World War I observers to see as far as 40 miles behind enemy lines to spot troop movements, chart trench systems and direct artillery fire. The observation balloon most used by Americans was named for its designer, French engineer Lt. Albert Caquot. The hydrogen-filled balloon could lift two passengers in its basket, along with charting and communications equipment, plus the weight of its mooring cable, to a height of about 4,000 feet in good weather. Normal operations were between 1,000 and 4,000 feet. During WWI, American balloon observers directed artillery fire at targets such as troop concentrations and supply dumps. They noted more than 1,000 enemy airplane sightings, 1,000 instances of military traffic on railroads and roads and 400 artillery batteries. Witchcraft Out of the Shadows: A History by Leo Ruickbie

Robert Hale Ltd, London, 2011. First Paperback Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. red end-papers; This complete history of witchcraft from Ancient Greece to the present day charts the rise and development of witchcraft and the modern witchcraft religion of Wicca. Today witchcraft is on everyone's lips, on television, film and in literature, but few know, or are even able to guess at, its shadowy history. This in-depth investigation discovers how the ideas we have about witchcraft took shape thousands of years ago in the myths and religions of the ancient world. It looks at why these ideas were expressed so violently during the era of the witch trials. Finally, it reveals how witchcraft has been transformed into one of the most radical and fastest growing religions of our age - a religion of equality and compassion that still has the power to unsettle even the bravest amongst us. With new analyses, fresh insights and previously unpublished material drawn from the author's doctoral research into the mysticism, magic and social meaning of Wicca, this is the first book to bring witchcraft fully out of the shadows. Group Of Four Aviation Photographs From 1910 (Apparently from Flugfeld in Puchheim) by [Ephemera] [Aviation] [Photographs]

Pucheim, Germany. Very Good+. 1910. Other. B&W Illustrations; This is a group of four small photographs (3.5" length x 2.5x height) possibly on salted paper of airplanes flown at the Munich Air Race of 1910. The reverse of the photographs give basic descriptions, including the place -- Puchheim and the Aviators. The grpou of for prints come with an autograph (handwritten) statement from the owner giving them to a friend for his aviation collection. The aviators include: Emil Jeannin, Dr. Otto Lindpaintner and Gustav Otto. While Emil Jeannin is listed as one of the five pilots engaged for this race, the other three aviators were apparently running in the same circles / groups and likely brought their planes with them. "The Munich "Akademie für Aviatik" was founded in 1909, mainly by members of the Royal Bavarian Automobile Club. Its main aim was promoting aviation, particularly by flying dirigibles and other flying machines. This included building an airfield with all necessary installations, but also creating a library and a museum and the awarding of prizes for competitions. Suitable grounds for an airfield were found in the village of Puchheim, 15 kilometres west of central Munich, where 76 hectares of moorland was bought and leased. A modern and completely equipped airfield with a two-kilometre race course was built. It was decided to celebrate the opening of the airfield by organizing an "aviation week" of five days in the end of May, starting less than a week after the Berlin-Johannisthal spring meeting. Five pilots were engaged. Emil Jeannin, Baron Pierre de Caters and Ellery von Gorrissen came directly from the Berlin meeting, where the two former had been very successful. They were accompanied by Belgian Jules Tyck on a Blériot and local Munich man Simon Brunnhuber on one of the Antoinettes bought by Walther Huth, who would later start the Albatros company." LANGUAGES OF WITCHCRAFT Narrative, Ideology and Meaning in Early Modern Culture by Clark, Stuart

London: Macmillan. New in New dust jacket. 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. 033379348X . Book is new, with light shelf wear to the dustjacket involving 2 small tears to upper spine and light scuffing to rear - otherwise as new. " Different conceptions of the world and of reality have made witchcraft possible in some societies and impossible in others. How did the people of early modern Europe experience it, what was it, and what was its place in their culture? ......; 8vo; The news essays in this collection illustrate the latest trends in witchcraft research and in cultural history in general. After three decades in which the social analysis of witchcraft accusations has dominated the subject, they turn instead to its significance and meaning as a cultural phenomenon? To the "languages" of witchcraft, rather than its causes. As a result, witchcraft seems less startling than it once was, yet more revealing of the world in which it occurred. " .
