This collection of Russian folk tales contains stories of magic and enchantment, of harrowing adventure, and of love lost and found; they were collected and edited by Albert B. Lord (1912-1991), scholar and professor of Slavic literature at Harvard University. Illustrations are by Teje Etchemendy, who creates scenes of colourful playfulness and patterns that contain a magic equal to that of the folk tales. This publication by The Limited Editions Club is designed by Adrian Wilson, a typographer who has proffered his considerable skills in design and bookbinding for previous editions by the LEC. ___DESCRIPTION: Full red cloth with a vertical band of white linen woven with red and maroon pattern, gilt lettering and decorative border on the spine, title page in red and black with black decorative borders, black and red snowflake pattern as headpieces thoughout, full-colour reproductions of watercolours by Teje Etchemendy throughout, black line drawings by Etchemendy throughout; monotype Palatino type, smooth antique Curtis paper, quarto size (10.75" by 8"), pagination: [i-viii] ix-xx [1-2] 3-196 [197] [1 colophon], one of 1500 copies, this number 351, signed by Teje Etchemendy on the colophon. With announcement for the book, one sheet, and the LEC Monthly Letter, one sheet folded once to form four pages, then folded in half for mailing. In original glassine wrapper, in a slipcase covered in maroon paper with a cream paper label with purple-grey lettering and decorative borders. ___CONDITION:  A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings. The announcement is VG+, clean but with several shallow creases; the LEC Monthly Letter is near fine, clean, without wear other than a very shallow, small crease to the top fore-edge corner. The glassine wrapper is better than very good, clean overall, minor overall edgewear and some creases to the front panel, the spine somewhat.
