    Saint, Seer and Scientist: The Remarkable Story of George Washington Carver of Tuskegee, Alabama by J.H. Hunter

    Toronto Canada: Evangelical Publishers, 1942. VG+/1st ed. This is a short biography of George Washington Carver, the man that almost single handedly save Southern cotton farmers by developing alternative crops for cotton after the boll weevill and soil erosion took out that crop. Chief amongst these was peanuts. He developed and promoted about a 100 products made from peanuts. He also was the first to head the Agricultural Department at Tuskegee Institute; he taught there for 47 years. He was a remarkable man, certainly one of the finest educators and agricultural scientist the South can lay claim to. Books is clean, securelystapled into orange construction paper wraps. 32 pages, with several great b&w photos of Dr. Carver. Interior is clean and white on higher grade paper. No tears or nicks.     Savannah Georgia: The Morning News, 1899. G/1st ed. As far as I can tell, this is the only original copy of this particular reunion for sale, and only 4 in the US library system. Cover is firmly stapled to booklet, with cover being fairly clean but missing a small area near spine at the bottom of the front panel, and a bottom outside corner on the back (see pictures). The interior is clean and unmarked. The interior paper is of a higher quality than the cover; slick and glossy and full of advertisments. The Official Programme for the 3 day reunion is listed, and also the Annual, Georgia Division of the United Sons (of) Confederate Veterns' programme . Lots of pictures of Confederate War heroes and speakers for the Reunion and a list of Troops furnished by Savannah and vicinity in the Confederarte Service. Booklet contains a large full page b&w detailed map of the battefield, and many large b&w photos of the area before and after the Civil War. No photos of battle scenes or destruction from the war. Each photo has a lengthy caption describing the importance of the area pictured. Eight pages of stories told to editor Oliver T. Reilly by veterans of the battle. Lincoln's address at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Also the story of Antietam from the tablets erected by the battlefield Commission separated into Confederate and Union tablets. Booklet is clean with a couple of soiled spots on back cover. Also has an orignial string tie to anchor all pages. Covers have some surface soiling, but no foxing or markings. Enterior pages have no foxing or marking and are very lightly tanned.     The Answer by Harry Stillwell Edwards

    Macon Georgia: Litho Press, 1989. VG/0/Reprint. Harry Stillwell Edwards won a second place prize of $500.00 for this short story from Life Magazine in 1916, and was later included in a volume of his short stories. Edwards was well known in Georgia for his stories of Eneas Africanus and Eneas Africanus, Defendant. This booklet was printed in 1989 by Litho Press for Robert L. McCommon, Jr., probably given out as a gift or with some kind of purchase. The booklet is 8 pages long, firmly stapled, with a small stain on the paper front cover, and two even smaller ones on the back. No stains orsoiling to interior. Signed at the top of the title page : "To Helen With Love from the author's granddaughter. ----------". This may be a first stand - alone-- I did not find another copy at all. Between the 1930s and the 1940s, the American Jewish Committe became more active in the support of Jewish Displaced Persons from Europe. The AJC with other groups worked as a successful lobby to bring 100,000 Jewish Displaced Persons to the United States. This book represents thought at that time for incorporation into American society; not only for the new immigrants but also for the American Jews as there was some antisemitic feelings in this country. This one is the Fourth Edition-1933 and has a little wear: split from the lower staple to the heel of the spine, theres some additional white paper glued(?) to the back cover. There is also a line of script on the front free endpaper:"From Mother and Daddy 1933." The interior is clean and the pages are white, no marking or writing. The material was assembled and prepared by the Seminole Agency Staff in Dania, Florida. 18 pages of information and background about the Seminoles and 1 page of Publications from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Many b&w photos of traditional Seminole dress, schools, farms, housing. But the best photos are of the Seminole children. Apparently the older children (teenagers) left Florida and went to Oklahoma to the Sequoyah Vocational School. A good look at life in Florida for the Seminoles in the 50s.. Pamphlet is firmly attached to its stapled binding, though the staples have rusted. Some light stains to cover.
