Symphony No.3 in F major

by George Whitefield Chadwick

This is a new, digitally enhanced reprint of the score originally published in 1896 by Arthur P. Schmidt. Chadwick's Symphony No.3 was composed two years earlier and was awarded the first prize in the competition held by the National Conservatory in New York. The judge was the visiting Antonin Dvorak. The work received high praises in the composer's lifetime but fell out of fashion in the 1930s. Only in recent years has it experienced a revival of interest.

Requiem, K.626

by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ; Michael Ostrzyga (completion)

This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozart's fragmentary "Requiem" as well as an alternative to the traditional Süßmayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozart's idiom taking into account historical additions by Süßmayr and Eybler.... Rob-Roy Overture, H 54

by Hector Berlioz ; Charles Malherbe (editor) ; Felix Weingartner (editor)

Composed in the summer of 1831 while in Rome, Berlioz's work was inspired by the Scottish rebel Rob-Roy MacGregor had to wait until the spring of 1833 for its premiere. The composer abandoned the piece shortly afterwards, but used some of the music material for his more famous "Harold in Italy". An unabridged, digitally enhanced reprint from Volume 4 of Series II of the Berlioz Complete Works, edited by Charles Malherbe and Felix Weingartner, issued by Breitkopf and Härtel between 1900 and 1907, this... Liebeslieder Suite

Liebeslieder Suite

by Johannes Brahms ; Richard W. Sargeant Jr. (arranger)

In the wake of the positive reception of Brahms's first set of Liebeslieder-Walzer after their 1869 premiere, the conductor Ernst Rudorff persuaded the composer to orchestrate the accompaniment for eight of the eighteen selections from Op.52 (plus another piece subsequently included in the Op.65 set) for a concert given at Berlin's Hochschule on March 19, 1870. Offered here is a vocal score which matches our newly researched and superbly engraved edition of Brahms' selection of nine 'Liebeslieder'... Read more about this item

Messe Solennelle de Ste. Cecile

Messe Solennelle de Ste. Cecile

by Charles Gounod ; Joseph Barnby (arranger)

In Paris on Nov. 22, 1855, the "Solemn Mass of St. Cecilia" was first performed in its entirety. The Sanctus and Benedictus movements were highly acclaimed when performed in London four and a half years before. It was the custom to celebrate the feast of St. Cecilia, the patron Saint of music, with the production of new compositions in the Eglise de St. Eustache. Gounod dedicated his mass to the memory of his father-in-law Zimmermann, former professor of the Conservatory, who had died Oct. 29, 1853.... Read more about this item

Gloria in Excelsis Deo, BWV 191

Gloria in Excelsis Deo, BWV 191

by Johann Sebastian Bach ; Bernhard Todt (arranger) ; Alfred Dörffel (editor) ; Karel Torvik (editor)

An interesting case of self-borrowing. Bach took music from his own Mass in B-minor (BWV 191/1 corresponds to the Gloria in excelsis Deo, BWV 191/2 to the Domine Deus, BWV 191/3 to the Cum sancto spiritu) for use in this latin cantata written to celebrate the Peace of Dresden (which ended the 2nd Silesian war). It was first performed on Christmas Day, 1745. Newly engraved carefully edited vocal score based on the Bach Gessellschaft edition produced in an easy-to-read A4 format. Large score and parts from... Pelleas et Melisande, CD 93 / L 88

Pelleas et Melisande, CD 93 / L 88

by Claude Debussy

Debussy's sole completed opera was given its premiere at Paris' Opera Comique on April 30, 1902. It was the culmination of an eight-year effort on the composer's part. Though not an immediate sensation like Puccini's "Madame Butterfly" two years later in Milan, the five-act lyric drama, after the identically titled play by Maeterlinck, enjoyed a successful run in the first two decades of the 20th century. Debussy's masterpiece of orchestral color is presented in a new, digitally-enhanced reprint of the... Read more about this item

Serenade for String Orchestra, Op.25

Serenade for String Orchestra, Op.25

by Arthur Foote

Foote's 20-minute gem was actually pieced together from a couple of earlier, unpublished string orchestra works: three movements from the 1886 Suite in E major, Op.12; and two movements from the 1889 Suite in D major, Op.21. In 1891, the composer re-worked these into the present five-movement work which was given its premiere by the Baltimore Symphony in January 1893. This new study score is a digitally-enhanced reprint of the one issued by Arthur P. Schmidt in 1892.

The premiere took place in St. Petersburg on April 20, 1880 with the Orchestra of the Russian opera under the baton of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. La Damnation de Faust, Op.24 / H 111

La Damnation de Faust, Op.24 / H 111

by Hector Berlioz ; Charles Malherbe (editor) ; Felix Weingartner (editor)

Berlioz composed his tremendous "Legende dramatique" in 1845-46, largely creating his own libretto after Gerard de Nerval's French translation of the famous Faust story by Goethe. The composer produced the dramatic oratorio at his own expense for the premiere on December 6, 1846 at Paris' Opera-Comique. Despite critical acclaim, the performance was not well-attended - a major financial setback for the composer. This new study score is a digitally-enhanced reprint of the score issued in 1907 by Breitkopf... Read more about this item

Gloria in D major, RV 589

Gloria in D major, RV 589

by Antonio Vivaldi ; Clayton Westermann (editor)

The most famous of three settings of the Gloria text by Vivaldi, this one (RV 589) most likely dates from about the same time as its predecessor, during the composer's tenure at the Ospedale della Pietà convent in Venice (1713-40). It's also notable for the borrowing of the "Cum Sancto Spiritu" chorus in the setting composed by Vivaldi's fellow Venetian - Giovanni Maria Ruggieri in 1708.This new vocal score is a digitally enhanced reprint of the one originally prepared by the American musicologist... Symphony No.1

Symphony No.1

by Alexander Borodin

Borodin started composing his first excursion into the symphonic form in 1862, while studying with Mily Balakirev. He worked on it sporadically for the next five years, making revisions in the wake of an informal orchestral reading in 1867. The official premiere, at a concert of the Russian Musical Society on 23 December 1868 conducted by his tutor Balakirev, successfully established Borodin as a major force in Russian orchestral music. The score presented here is a digitally-enhanced reprint of the one... Read more about this item
