The 1915 exposition was located on what is now San Francisco's Marina Green. The only structure remaining in place is the domed Palace of Fine Arts, designed by Bernard Maybeck. The United States gained construction rights after Panama declared its independence in 1903, and the canal was opened to traffic on August 15, 1914.
